Chapter 4 - THE SENATOR’S MISTAKE

Senator Richard Caldwell moved with the swagger of a man who believed the world was divided into two categories: those who served him, and those who obeyed him.

He stopped beside table nine, ignoring Victor Costello entirely, his eyes fixed on Chloe.

"Ten minutes were up twenty minutes ago, Chloe," Caldwell said, his voice dropping into a familiar, oily whisper. "We have business to discuss in the back. Bring the whiskey tray."

Victor did not stand up.

He slowly set his glass down on the mahogany table.

The gentle clink of crystal against wood echoed in the sudden hush that had fallen over the adjacent tables.

"Senator Caldwell," Victor said.

Caldwell finally turned his head, his expression shifting from annoyance to sudden, chilling recognition as he registered the man sitting across from him.

"V-Victor," Caldwell stammered, his color draining instantly. "I didn't realize... I was just having a brief conversation with the staff about—"

"About the community healthcare grant?" Victor asked smoothly, leaning back in his chair and lacing his fingers together over his vest. "The one you planned to withhold from Oakridge Memorial unless Miss Bennett met you in a dark alley?"

Caldwell’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "That's... that's a private matter. Business between the state committee and—"

"There is nothing private about a public official extorting a citizen inside my restaurant," Victor said, his voice dropping an octave into a register that made the nearby diners drop their forks.

Victor raised his left hand slightly.

From the shadows near the bar, Gabriel stepped forward, flanked by two other men in dark suits.

Caldwell took a panicked step backward. "Now hold on, Victor. We can talk about this. The zoning permits for your downtown development project—I can push them through the committee by tomorrow morning. Free of charge."

Victor looked at him the way a scientist might look at a particularly repulsive insect.

"My zoning permits were approved yesterday," Victor said quietly. "And you, Senator... are finished."

Gabriel stepped up behind Caldwell, his large hand resting firmly on the legislator’s shoulder, guiding him toward the heavy front doors with irresistible force.

"Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!" Caldwell shrieked, all pretense of dignity vanishing as he was dragged across the dining room. "I'll have this place shut down by the health inspector! I'll have the liquor license revoked!"

The front doors swung open, swallowed the screaming senator into the freezing sleet, and clicked shut.

Silence returned to the Gilded Stag.
