Chapter 15 - The Real Perfect Wedding

One year later, the church in Charleston, South Carolina, smelled like white roses, polished wood, and expensive perfume.
But this time, there was no tension, no shame, and no cruelty.
I stood at the back of the church, wearing a stunning, fitted lace gown of ivory silk. My arms were bare, showing the faint, silver lines of my survival like badges of honor. I held a bouquet of white roses, my face bright with a radiant, uncomplicated happiness.
The organist began to play the wedding march—a beautiful, triumphant melody that filled the high stone arches.
I walked down the aisle, my steps steady, strong, and confident. The pews were filled with real, loyal friends, their faces bright with smiles and tears of joy.
Daniel stood at the altar, wearing a tailored black tuxedo, his eyes locked on me, his face wet with tears of pure, overwhelming love. Beside him stood Margaret, watching me with a pride that had nothing to do with vanity, and everything to do with family.
I reached the altar, and Daniel took my hand, his grip warm and secure.
"You are the most beautiful bride this church has ever seen, Clara," he whispered.
"I am," I smiled, looking up at the stained-glass light. "Because I am loved."
