Chapter 11 - Emily’s Downfall

While I was preparing for my first surgery, Emily’s perfect life was in ruins.

She was evicted from her luxury condo after the court seized the property to pay back the embezzled funds. Her white Lexus was repossessed, and her personal bank accounts were wiped clean. She was forced to move into a cheap, run-down motel near the interstate with our parents, who were facing bankruptcy.

One afternoon, as I was sitting in the clinic’s garden, Emily appeared at the gate.

She looked terrible. Her designer clothes were wrinkled and dirty, her hair messy, her face pale and swollen from crying. She looked like a ghost of the beautiful bride who had stood at the altar.

"Clara!" Emily screamed, clawing at the iron gate. "Clara, please! You have to tell them to stop! The police... they’re going to arrest Mom and Dad! We have no money, no home! I’m ruined, Clara!"

I stood up from my bench, walking slowly toward the gate. I didn't feel angry; I only felt a deep, profound pity.

"You did this to yourself, Emily," I said, my voice quiet and steady. "You chose to treat me like an embarrassment. You chose to spend the money that was supposed to heal my body. You loved the perfect image of your life, but you forgot that a life built on lies eventually collapses."

"I was a child, Clara!" she wept. "I didn't know about the money!"

"You knew, Emily," I said, pulling out a printout of her text messages. "You told Mom to make sure I didn't come to your parties because 'she’s too ugly to be around my friends.' You were a willing partner in my humiliation. Now, you get to live with the consequences."

Before she could say another word, the clinic’s security team stepped forward, gently guiding her away from the property.

I turned my back on her, walking back into the warm, safe clinic.
