Chapter 8 - THE WINTER COAT

The Holy Name Cathedral was packed with four hundred of the most dangerous men in the country.

The air was thick with the scent of expensive cologne, incense, and underlying tension.

I sat in the passenger seat of the laundry van as Daniel tore through downtown traffic, tires squealing around every corner. In the back, Anna and the baby were wrapped in heated blankets, safe and heavily guarded by our men.

"ETA two minutes!" Daniel yelled over the roar of the engine.

"Is Luca answering?" I asked, staring at my phone.

"He turned his phone over to his best man," Daniel cursed. "Protocol for the vows. He's completely in the dark."

At exactly 2:03 PM, the van skidded to a halt on the sidewalk directly in front of the cathedral's massive wooden doors.

"Stay in the van with them," I told Daniel. "If things go wrong, get Anna and the baby out of the city."

"Lily, you can't go in there alone," Daniel protested.

"He needs to see me," I said, stepping out of the van. "It's the only way he'll know we succeeded."

I didn't have a designer dress. I didn't have a formal invitation. I was wearing jeans, a sweater stained with frost and dirt, and a bandage on my hand.

But I didn't care.

I pushed through the outer vestibule, ignoring the shocked gasps of the Bellini family guards. Before they could stop me, I threw my weight against the heavy oak doors of the sanctuary.

Bang.

The doors flew open, echoing like a gunshot through the vaulted ceilings.

The organ music abruptly stopped.

Four hundred heads turned to look at me.

At the end of the long, velvet-lined aisle stood Luca. He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, looking like a king facing his execution.

Beside him stood Vanessa. She was wearing a custom white lace gown, dripping in diamonds, a triumphant, gloating smile plastered on her face.

The priest had just raised the merger documents for Luca to sign.

Luca's eyes locked onto mine from a hundred feet away.

For a fraction of a second, the mafia boss facade cracked. Utter, overwhelming relief washed over his face. He saw me standing. He saw I was alive.

He knew Anna and the baby were safe.

Vanessa turned around, her perfect smile dropping into a mask of pure, unfiltered rage.

"What is the meaning of this?" Vanessa’s father, Don Bellini, shouted from the front pew. "Guards! Remove this trash!"

Two massive men in suits stepped into the aisle, reaching for me.

"Touch her, and I will end your bloodline today."

Luca’s voice wasn't a shout. It was a low, vibrating growl that carried through the silent cathedral. It possessed so much authority that the two guards froze in their tracks.

Luca stepped away from the altar, ignoring Vanessa completely, and walked halfway down the aisle toward me.

"Lily," he said, loud enough for everyone to hear. "Are they safe?"

"They're safe, Luca," I replied, my voice steady. "They're in the van."

The cathedral erupted in confused murmurs.

Vanessa’s face went pale. "Luca, darling, what is she talking about? Who is she?"

Luca turned back to Vanessa. He didn't look angry. He looked at her with the cold detachment one gives an insect before crushing it.

"She's talking about my sister-in-law, Anna. And my niece."

A collective gasp echoed from the Moretti loyalists in the pews.

"They were dead!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice pitching into hysteria. "Michael went crazy and killed them!"

"No," a voice echoed from the side sacristy door.

Everyone turned.

Stepping out from the shadows was Michael Moretti.

He was bruised, battered, and handcuffed, flanked by a Vitiello guard who looked terrified now that the secret was out.

"She kept me alive," Michael said, his voice raspy but strong, echoing through the church. "To force Luca to sign those papers."

Don Bellini stood up, looking at his daughter in absolute horror. "Vanessa... what have you done? You involved the Vitiellos?"

Vanessa realized she was trapped. The entire room—her family, Luca's family, the Commission—was staring at her.

Her sweet facade finally shattered.

She reached into the bodice of her wedding dress, pulled out a small, silver derringer pistol, and pointed it directly at Michael.

"Sign the paper, Luca!" she screamed, spit flying from her lips. "Sign the damn paper, or I blow your brother's brains out right here in front of God!"

The entire cathedral drew weapons. A hundred guns cocked in unison. A standoff.

"Sign it!" she yelled, her hand shaking.

I stepped forward into the aisle.

"He's not signing anything, Vanessa," I said loudly.

She whipped her head toward me, the gun wavering. "Shut up, you pathetic little maid!"

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the boarding ticket I had found in the freezer. I held it up.

"Flight 409 to Buenos Aires," I called out. "Departing at five. One ticket."

I looked directly at Don Bellini.

"She wasn't merging your families to save you from the Vitiellos," I told the horrified father. "She was going to take the Moretti cash and run, leaving your entire family to be slaughtered for the debt."

Don Bellini's face turned purple. "You traitorous bitch," he whispered to his own daughter.

Vanessa’s eyes widened in sheer panic. She had lost her leverage. She had lost her family.

She turned the gun away from Michael and pointed it directly at me.

"I'm going to kill you," she hissed.

She pulled the trigger.
