Chapter 11 - THE CONFESSION LETTER

"He sent corrupt cops?" Luca yelled over the gunfire. "If we kill them, he frames the Moretti family for murdering police officers. The Feds will wipe us out!"
"He wants you to surrender," I realized, panic gripping my chest. "He wants to take the estate without a mafia war. He’s using badges to do his dirty work!"
"Boss!" Daniel’s voice crackled on the radio. "We have police cruisers massing at the front gate. They have a warrant for your arrest. They're claiming you kidnapped Michael!"
Don Bellini had orchestrated the perfect trap. He blamed the entire conspiracy on Luca.
"Don't shoot back!" Luca yelled to the guards in the cellar. "Cease fire!"
The gunfire stopped.
"Luca Moretti!" a voice echoed from the tunnel entrance. "Throw out your weapons! You are under arrest!"
Luca looked at me. His dark eyes were filled with a profound, quiet sorrow.
"If I surrender," Luca whispered, "they'll take me away. Bellini will take over the estate. He'll kill Michael. And he won't leave witnesses."
He looked at my face, gently touching my cheek.
"I can't let them hurt you, Lily."
"No," I pleaded, grabbing his jacket. "Don't give up. There has to be a way."
Luca shook his head. He pulled a folded piece of paper from his inside pocket. He pressed it into my hand.
"What is this?" I asked, tears blurring my vision.
"It's a signed confession," Luca said softly. "I drafted it this morning, just in case. It states that I acted alone in all syndicate crimes. It absolves Michael. It leaves my legitimate, clean corporate assets entirely to you."
"I don't want your money!" I sobbed. "I want you!"
"Show this to the cops," Luca insisted. "It will force them to take me in alive. It buys you time to get the family out through the tunnel."
Before I could stop him, Luca stood up, tossing his gun onto the stone floor. He raised his hands and walked out from behind the barrels.
"I'm unarmed!" Luca shouted.
The tactical team swarmed him instantly, slamming him against the wall and clicking heavy cuffs on his wrists.
"Luca!" I screamed, stepping out.
One of the cops pointed a rifle at me. "Stay on the ground, lady!"
They dragged Luca toward the tunnel. He looked back at me over his shoulder, his eyes silently begging me to run.
I stood in the wine cellar, trembling, holding the confession letter.
I was supposed to take the money. I was supposed to run.
But I was tired of running. I was tired of being the helpless maid.
I looked at the micro-SD card still gripped in my hand.
Corrupt cops.
If they were corrupt, they were being paid. And if they were being paid, there was a digital trail.
I turned and ran up the stairs, bypassing the safe room, and sprinted directly into Luca’s private study.
I booted up his computer, ignoring the flashing red emergency lights. I slammed the micro-SD card into the reader.
Files flooded the screen.
It was a blackmail ledger. Don Bellini hadn't just paid these cops; he had recorded every transaction. He was keeping proof to ensure they stayed loyal. And the dead cop in the cellar had made a copy for his own insurance.
I hit PRINT.
The printer whirred, spitting out pages of offshore wire transfers linking the Chicago Police Captain directly to the Bellini crime family.
I grabbed the papers, my heart pounding so hard it hurt.
I didn't run to the tunnel. I ran to the front door.
I threw open the massive mahogany doors of the mansion.
Dozens of red and blue police lights illuminated the rain-slicked driveway. Heavily armed SWAT teams were crouched behind their vehicles.
And standing in the center of it all, smiling smugly under an umbrella, was Don Bellini, talking to a Police Captain.
They had just brought Luca up from the side of the house in handcuffs.
"Stop!" I screamed, running down the front steps into the pouring rain.
Every gun swiveled toward me.
"Hold your fire!" the Captain yelled.
May you like
I ignored the weapons. I marched straight up to the Police Captain and shoved the printed papers directly into his chest.
"You want to arrest someone?" I shouted, my voice carrying over the storm. "Arrest the man paying your offshore accounts, Captain!"
