THE ENGAGEMENT CAKE / Chapter 1 / 11

Chapter 2 - THE SILVER WATCH

The video ended.

The study fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Luca stared at the black screen of his computer, his chest rising and falling in slow, measured breaths. The mafia boss who had just hosted a flawless engagement dinner was gone. In his place sat a man realizing he was sleeping next to a monster.

I stood by the door, clutching my bandaged right hand against my apron.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I had just exposed the deepest, darkest secret of the Moretti family, and I had no idea if I was going to survive the night.

"Michael went missing six months ago," Luca said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "Vanessa sat in my living room and cried with me. She held my hand at his memorial service."

He slowly turned his head to look at me.

"And you're telling me she brokered the sale of my unborn niece or nephew?"

"I don't know, Mr. Moretti," I whispered, tears spilling over my lashes. "I only know what the woman from the bakery told me. She said Anna gave her the USB drive months ago, with instructions to put it in the cake if she never came back."

Luca stood up. He didn't yell. He didn't throw anything.

The absolute stillness of his body was far more frightening than rage.

He walked over to his massive mahogany desk and opened a locked drawer. He bypassed the stacks of cash and the sleek black handgun, reaching for a small cedar box in the back.

He opened it and pulled out a heavy, silver pocket watch.

"This was my grandfather's," Luca said, his eyes fixed on the intricate metalwork. "I gave it to Michael when he became a made man. He never took it off."

I stepped closer, ignoring the throbbing pain in my palm. "Where did you find it?"

"I didn't," Luca said, his jaw tightening. "Vanessa gave it to me two weeks after Michael vanished. She said the police found it in his abandoned car by the river. She said it was proof he had killed himself."

He turned the watch over.

"But look at the back, Lily."

I leaned in. The silver casing was scratched, but near the hinge, there were tiny, dark reddish-brown flakes trapped in the metal grooves.

Dried blood.

"The police would have cleaned this and tagged it in an evidence bag," Luca said softly. "They wouldn't have handed it directly to my fiancée."

He looked at the watch, the pieces of the puzzle snapping together with brutal clarity.

"She didn't find this in his car. She took it off his wrist."

My breath caught in my throat. Vanessa hadn't just orchestrated a kidnapping. She had been intimately involved in the violence.

"Mr. Moretti," I said, my voice trembling. "If Vanessa knows the bakery woman brought this to the house today… she knows the secret is out."

Luca froze.

He looked at his phone, tapping a few buttons to access the estate's security logs. His eyes scanned the screen, and the color slowly drained from his face.

"Vanessa's personal driver," Luca said, his voice laced with sudden urgency. "He left the estate twenty minutes ago."

"Where did he go?"

Luca looked up at me, his dark eyes wide with a sudden, terrifying realization.

"Lily, when you applied for this job, you put down an emergency contact. Who is living at your apartment right now?"

My blood ran ice cold.

"My sister, Chloe," I gasped. "And my son."

Luca’s eyebrows shot up. "You have a child?"

"Leo. He's six." Panic seized my throat, choking me. "I didn't tell anyone here. I didn't want the family to know I had a child. Please, Mr. Moretti, why is her driver going to my apartment?"

"Because Chloe is a nursing student," Luca said, grabbing his gun and shoving it into his shoulder holster. "And six months ago, she was doing her clinical rotations at the exact private clinic where Anna was treated for her pregnancy."

The room spun. Vanessa was tying up loose ends. And my family was the last thread.

Luca grabbed my uninjured arm. "We have to go. Now."
