Chapter 12 - THE DIAMOND NECKLACE

The Police Captain looked down at the papers in the rain.

His face drained of color.

"What is this?" Don Bellini demanded, stepping forward.

"It's your blackmail ledger, Don Bellini," I said loudly, making sure every honest cop on the perimeter could hear me. "The one you used to buy this Captain to raid this house. The micro-SD card was dropped by one of your tactical men in the basement."

The SWAT officers on the perimeter exchanged confused, angry glances. They thought they were here for a legitimate raid. Now they realized they were being used as a hit squad.

"Lies!" Bellini roared, reaching inside his trench coat.

But Luca, even in handcuffs, was faster.

He lunged forward, sweeping his leg behind the Police Captain's knees, sending the corrupt officer crashing to the ground.

In the chaos, the honest SWAT commander shouted, "Drop the weapon, Bellini!"

Don Bellini froze, his hand half-drawn from his coat, realizing a dozen laser sights were suddenly painting his chest.

He slowly raised his hands in defeat.

The SWAT commander walked forward, yanking the Captain off the ground and taking his badge. "You're done. Both of you."

He turned to the officers holding Luca. "Uncuff him."

The heavy steel bracelets fell away from Luca's wrists.

He stood up, rubbing his arms, the rain soaking his clothes. He didn't look at the police. He didn't look at Bellini.

He walked straight toward me.

He grabbed my face in both of his large hands and kissed me, hard and desperately, right in the middle of the driveway. The rain washed away the dirt and the fear, leaving only the fierce, burning reality that we had survived.

"You didn't run," he breathed against my lips.

"I'm not going anywhere," I whispered back.

One Year Later.

The Moretti estate was bathed in warm, golden afternoon sunlight.

The heavy iron gates were open. The armed guards were gone.

I stood on the back patio, wearing a simple, elegant sundress, watching the scene unfold on the sprawling green lawn.

Michael was pushing his one-year-old daughter on a velvet-roped swing set, while Anna laughed, taking photos.

Chloe was sitting on a picnic blanket, helping Leo read a book about dinosaurs.

The mafia syndicate was gone. Using the confession letter and the Bellini blackmail files, Luca had completely dismantled the underworld operations, handing the corrupt elements to the Feds in exchange for absolute immunity for his family.

The Moretti family was now fully legitimate. A clean, corporate empire.

Footsteps sounded on the stone patio behind me.

Strong arms wrapped around my waist, pulling my back against a solid chest. Luca rested his chin on my shoulder, sighing contentedly as he watched our family.

"Mr. CEO," I smiled, leaning back into his embrace.

"Mrs. Moretti," he replied, his voice a low, happy rumble.

He reached gently for my right hand.

The burn Vanessa had given me was completely healed, leaving only a faint, silvery scar across my palm. It was a reminder of the fire we had walked through.

Luca turned me around to face him. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a long, flat velvet box.

"Happy Anniversary," he said softly.

I opened it.

Resting on the black velvet was a breathtaking diamond necklace. The stones were flawless, catching the sunlight in dazzling prisms.

"Luca, it's beautiful," I gasped. "But you didn't have to."

"I wanted to," he said, taking the necklace and stepping behind me to clasp it around my neck. "The first time you stood up for me, you were wearing a torn maid's apron. I promised myself that one day, I would drape you in diamonds."

He turned me back around, his dark eyes filled with absolute, unwavering love.

"You gave me a life I never thought I could have, Lily. You gave me peace."

I reached up, touching the diamonds at my throat, and then rested my hand over his heart.

"We built it together," I said.

From the lawn, Leo dropped his book and came sprinting toward the patio.

"Dad!" Leo yelled, launching himself up the stairs. "Dad, come play with me!"

Luca caught him effortlessly, swinging him up onto his shoulders, making the little boy shriek with laughter.

"Alright, buddy," Luca laughed, looking down at me with a smile that lit up his entire face. "Let's go play."

I watched them run out onto the grass, the sun shining on my new diamond necklace, my son laughing, and my husband holding him high.

The dark days were finally behind us.

We were safe. We were free. And we were home.
