Chapter 5 - Secrets Inside the Penthouse Vault and the Voice Across the Wire

Inside the armored SUV, Mia was trembling violently, her fingers digging into the leather upholstery. Ethan placed his hand over hers. His grip was warm, steady, and unyielding.
"You're safe," Ethan said gently. "Take a breath."
Mia looked at him, then down at the ruined, rain-soaked steak sitting on his lap like a morbid trophy. "Who was that detective? How did he know we were in the alley?"
Detective Vance glanced back in the rearview mirror, his weathered face set in stone. "Because my brother Antoine called me ten minutes ago from the restaurant's walk-in cooler, sobbing his eyes out. He said Daniel Reed and Gavin Pike had him by the throat. They told him if he didn't plate that off-menu ribeye for Table Eight tonight, they’d release fabricated health inspection logs that would shut down his career forever."
Ethan felt a surge of cold fury. "Daniel Reed ordered the hit personally?"
"Reed’s whole empire of cards is collapsing, Brooks," Detective Vance answered grimly. "Antoine didn't know what was in the sauce. Pike gave him a pre-mixed reduction jar and told him it was an imported truffle extract. But Antoine tasted a drop on the tip of his finger before plating it. He recognized the taste immediately."
"Recognized what?" Mia asked, her voice shaking.
"Potassium cyanide mixed with digitalis," Vance replied. "A combination designed to trigger immediate ventricular fibrillation in someone with high blood pressure, while masking itself as an organic heart attack during a standard coroner's preliminary check. The same concoction that killed that executive at Table Fourteen three nights ago."
"Table Fourteen wasn't a random customer," Ethan said, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "That was Robert Sterling. The state tax auditor who launched an unannounced inquiry into Bellweather's vendor payouts last week."
"Bingo," Vance said, turning the SUV onto a quiet side street leading to the University of Illinois biomedical annex. "Reed isn't just stealing money, Ethan. He’s liquidating the entire company’s equity through offshore shell companies before the annual shareholder gala this Friday. Anyone who gets close to the books ends up in a morgue or an unmarked grave."
Ethan pulled out his phone. The screen lit up with three missed calls and a voice message from Daniel Reed.
Ethan hit play and held the speaker between himself and Mia.
Daniel’s smooth, grandfatherly voice filled the cabin of the SUV:
"Ethan, my boy... I hear from the floor staff that you paid an unexpected visit to Bellweather tonight under a fake name. You should have told me you were coming, son. We had a magnificent vintage prepared for you. Call me as soon as you get this. We need to discuss the future of the Brooks legacy before tomorrow morning's board vote. Don't do anything rash."

Mia shivered. "He sounds like a monster."
"He was my father's best friend," Ethan said quietly, his jaw locked tight. "And he just signed his own arrest warrant."
