Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Ledgers and the Legacy Written in Stolen Blood

"My father didn't steal a single penny from this company," Mia said fiercely, her voice dropping into an angry, defensive whisper as she saw Ethan studying the documents. "He died broke. He died in a hospital bed with debt collectors calling his room every three hours!"
Ethan looked at the woman before him. The resemblance was undeniable now that he was looking for it—the shape of her brow, the stubborn line of her jaw. David Carter had been a man of ironclad integrity, a kitchen visionary who believed that hospitality was a sacred trust between host and guest. When David died four years ago, Daniel Reed had informed Ethan that David’s personal investments had collapsed, leaving the estate entirely insolvent.
Now, Ethan held proof that over fourteen million dollars had been laundered using David Carter’s name, estate tax ID, and social security number.
"I know your father didn't steal it, Mia," Ethan said softly.
"Then why does that paper say—"
"Because someone with administrator-level access to corporate banking created a synthetic identity using your father's deceased records," Ethan explained, his analytical mind assembling the puzzle at lightning speed. "They’ve been siphoning operational cash from Bellweather, running it through dummy seafood vendors, and dumping the untaxed proceeds into a dummy trust carrying your family's name. If federal auditors ever showed up, the entire fraud trail would point straight to David Carter’s surviving heirs."
Mia staggered back against the metal shelving. "To me. It points to me."
"And if you were suddenly charged with grand larceny and tax evasion," Ethan continued coldly, "no one would believe a penniless waitress who claimed she knew nothing about fourteen million dollars in the Caribbean."
"Who would do this?" tears welled in her eyes, mixed with hot rage. "Who hated my father that much?"
Before Ethan could answer, the beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight swept across the concrete floor just outside the alcove.
"Mia?"
Gavin Pike's voice boomed down the corridor, dripping with false concern. "Mia, sweetheart, are you back here? Table Eight left without paying his bill, and Chef Vance says you left an uninspected tray in the staging area. We need to have a quick chat in my office."
Mia looked at Ethan in absolute terror. "He knows."
Ethan didn't hesitate. He took the wrapped plate containing the poisoned ribeye in one hand and grabbed Mia's wrist with the other. "Is there an exit through the wine cellar?"
"Only the delivery dock. But it has a biometric lock."
"I have the code," Ethan said grimly.
"You have the executive lock code?" Mia stammered, following him as they darted through a narrow door marked Authorized Personnel Only.
"Trust me."
They slipped into the subterranean wine vault. The air dropped ten degrees instantly, thick with the scent of damp oak barrels and centuries-old vintage grapes. Rows of ten-thousand-dollar Bordeaux bottles gleamed under dim amber LED strips.
Ethan marched toward the steel exit door at the far end of the cellar. Beside the handle sat a digital keypad equipped with an infrared fingerprint reader.
Mia watched in disbelief as the man in the rumpled polyester blazer didn't bother typing a guest pass. Instead, he pressed his thumb firmly against the glass scanner.
BEEP-CHIRP.
The digital interface glowed green. A mechanical voice whispered: Welcome, Executive 01. Override initiated.
The heavy reinforced steel door clicked and swung open, revealing the cold night air of the rear alleyway.
Mia stopped dead in her tracks, pulling her arm from his grip. "Executive 01? That’s... that’s the private master clearance for the Brooks family."

Ethan turned to face her under the flickering streetlamp of the alley. Rain had begun to mist over Chicago, slicking the cobblestones. He reached up, took off the scratched reading glasses, and tossed them into a nearby recycling bin. He straightened his shoulders, shedding the timid posture of Eric Dawson, revealing the cold, aristocratic bearing of the man who ruled the city's hospitality skyline.
"My name is Ethan Brooks," he said calmly. "And we have about three minutes before Gavin Pike realizes I just unlocked my own back door."
