Chapter 14 - Restoring the Carter Name and Healing the Wounds of an Empire

Three days later, the grand ballroom of the Chicago Marriott was packed to capacity for the annual Brooks Hospitality shareholder assembly.

Over five hundred investors, journalists, and board members sat in stunned silence as Ethan Brooks stood at the podium. Behind him, high-definition presentation screens displayed the complete forensic audit detailing Daniel Reed’s four-year reign of embezzlement and murder, alongside the official state exoneration certificate for the late David Carter.

"For four years, this company profited off the silent sacrifice of a founder whose legacy was stolen by greed," Ethan’s voice echoed powerfully through the auditorium. "Today, we do not simply correct our ledgers. We restore our honor."

Ethan gestured toward the front row.

"The board of directors has unanimously approved the immediate transfer of thirty-five percent of all company equity into a permanent, protected trust managed exclusively by David Carter’s legal heir."

A spotlight illuminated Mia Carter.

She wore an elegant emerald-green silk dress, her head held high, radiating poise, strength, and quiet dignity. The audience rose to their feet in a thunderous, unanimous standing ovation that lasted for three full minutes.

Mia walked up the steps to the stage. When she reached the podium, Ethan stepped aside and offered her a warm, proud smile.

Mia looked out across the sea of investors and flashing cameras. She pulled a small, worn recipe card from her purse—the very first menu David Carter had hand-written thirty years ago on a piece of butcher paper.

"My father used to say that a true restaurant is not a business of numbers," Mia spoke into the microphone, her voice steady and clear. "It is a sanctuary where people come to be nourished, protected, and treated like family. Today... my father has finally come home."
