Chapter 6 - The Tiny Voice That Shattered the Dallas Millionaire's World

The grand bedroom fell into a silence so absolute that the ticking of the antique mantel clock sounded like artillery fire.

The police officer froze, his hand still locked around Grace’s handcuffed wrist.

Daniel Brooks looked as though he had been struck by a physical blow. His breath caught in his throat, his eyes widening in complete and utter shock. He dropped to his knees right there on the hardwood floor, his gaze locked onto his weeping daughter.

“Lucy...?” Daniel whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the syllables. “Baby... what did you say?”

Lucy didn't let go of Grace’s dress. She buried her tear-stained face into the fabric of the maid's skirt, her tiny fingers clutching the worn cotton like a lifeline.

Evelyn’s face turned an unnatural shade of chalky white. Her smug composure vanished in an instant, replaced by a look of sheer, frantic panic.

“She’s... she’s hallucinating!” Evelyn shrieked, her voice pitching up into a desperate screech. “The child is hysterical! She doesn't know what she’s saying! Officers, do your job and get this criminal out of the house!”

“Do not move an inch,” Daniel roared, his voice exploding with such thunderous power that the two police officers instinctively stepped back, releasing their grip on Grace.

Daniel stood up, his tall frame towering over his cousin. The broken, grieving man was gone; in his place stood a ferocious father whose protective instincts had been violently awakened.

Daniel knelt down beside Grace and Lucy, reaching out with gentle, trembling hands. “Lucy, look at Daddy, sweetheart. Tell Daddy what you mean.”

Lucy slowly lifted her head. Her hazel eyes, so identical to her late mother’s, were red and swollen from crying, but there was a fierce, desperate clarity in them that had never been there before.

Lucy pointed her tiny finger straight at Evelyn.

“Bad Auntie came to my room,” Lucy sobbed, each word coming out in small, broken gasps. “She put paper in Mommy’s picture. She said... she said bad monsters will take Daddy away if I talk. She said... Mommy crashed because Mommy didn't listen!”

Daniel felt his entire reality shatter into a million pieces.

The air in the room grew freezing cold. Daniel slowly turned his head to look at Evelyn Vance.

His eyes were no longer filled with sorrow. They were burning with a dark, lethal fury that made the wealthy socialite take three hurried steps backward toward the wall.

“Daniel, she’s three years old!” Evelyn stammered, raising her hands defensively. “She’s traumatized! She’s making up stories because of the shock! You can't honestly believe the rambling of a toddler over your own flesh and blood!”

Grace stepped forward, raising her handcuffed wrists. “Mr. Brooks, look inside the front pocket of my apron. There is a folded note. I found it hidden behind the velvet backing of Mrs. Brooks’s photo frame yesterday afternoon.”

Daniel immediately reached into Grace’s apron pocket. He pulled out the heavy cream stationery and unfolded it with shaking hands.

As his eyes read the vicious, handwritten death threat written to his three-year-old daughter, Daniel’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles in his neck strained against his collar.

He recognized the handwriting instantly.

It was the same sharp, elegant cursive that had appeared on every family birthday card, every holiday invitation, and every corporate document Evelyn Vance had ever signed.

“Officer,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a terrifying, deadly whisper. “Take the handcuffs off Grace Ellis immediately.”

The lead officer didn't hesitate. He pulled his key and unlocked the steel cuffs from Grace’s wrists. “Mr. Brooks, what would you like us to do?”

“Arrest Evelyn Vance,” Daniel commanded, his eyes boring into his cousin with pure hatred. “For terrorizing a minor, witness tampering, and staging a false criminal report.”

“You can't arrest me!” Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking as the second officer stepped forward and grabbed her wrists. “I am a Vance! I will have your badges for this! Daniel, you are making the biggest mistake of your life! You have no proof of anything!”

“We have the note in your handwriting,” Daniel said coldly. “We have the sedatives you had your nurse force into my daughter's body. And we have my daughter’s testimony.”

As the police officers secured the handcuffs around Evelyn’s wrists and dragged her kicking and screaming down the grand staircase, Daniel stood motionless in the center of the room.

He turned toward Grace, who had knelt down to wrap her arms securely around a crying Lucy.

For the first time in nine months, Lucy was not hiding under the bed. She was hugging Grace’s neck, burying her face in the maid’s shoulder, weeping out all the terror, pain, and isolation she had carried in silence for so long.

Daniel walked over, dropped to his knees beside them, and wrapped his long, powerful arms around both his daughter and the young maid who had saved her life.

And as the billionaire wept openly against his daughter’s hair, he whispered over and over:

“I’m sorry, baby. Daddy is so sorry. You’re safe now. I promise you, you’re safe.”
