Chapter 5 - The Cold Frame-Up: A Vicious Trap Set for the Innocent Maid

Grace remained frozen in the shadows of the pantry until Marcus finished his call, cursed violently, and stormed out of the kitchen, his heavy boots fading down the service corridor.
Only when the distant click of the estate’s side door echoed through the hall did Grace allow herself to exhale.
Her hands were trembling as she looked down at the brown glass bottle in her palm. The pieces of the dark puzzle were finally falling into place. Evelyn Vance wasn't just a bitter relative who wanted Lucy out of the way; she was actively orchestrating a systematic plot to render Lucy legally incapacitated. If Lucy was declared mentally incompetent and Daniel was deemed an unfit, emotionally broken father, Evelyn stood next in line to claim legal conservatorship over Lucy and the massive multi-million-dollar trust fund Amelia had left behind.
Grace knew she couldn't simply run to Daniel in the middle of the night without ironclad proof. Evelyn was Daniel’s family; Grace was just a newly hired maid from Oklahoma. If she made an accusation without undeniable evidence, Evelyn’s high-priced lawyers would twist the narrative and destroy her.
Grace carefully hid the bottle of sedatives and the threatening note inside the inner lining of her personal duffel bag in the staff quarters, determined to present everything to Daniel the following morning alongside the lab results.
However, Grace severely underestimated the ruthless cunning of Evelyn Vance.
At seven o’clock the next morning, the mansion was shattered by a deafening commotion.
Grace was in Lucy’s bedroom, helping the little girl drink a small cup of freshly squeezed orange juice—Lucy’s first voluntary sip of fruit juice in months—when the bedroom door was violently kicked open.
Two uniformed Dallas police officers stepped into the room, followed closely by Daniel, a smug-looking Evelyn, and the estate manager.
“That’s her, officers!” Evelyn pointed an accusing, manicured finger directly at Grace. “That’s the thief who stole my late aunt’s priceless heirloom jewelry!”
Grace stood up slowly, keeping Lucy safely behind her. “What are you talking about?”
“Don't play dumb with me, you little criminal!” Evelyn shrieked, playing the role of an outraged victim to perfection. “My mother’s vintage diamond tennis bracelet and Amelia’s emerald necklace went missing from the master safe last night! And lo and behold, when security searched the staff quarters ten minutes ago, look what they found hidden in your personal locker!”
One of the police officers held up a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside were two dazzling pieces of diamond jewelry—and right beside them was the brown glass bottle of sedatives Grace had hidden in her bag.
Daniel stood behind the officers, his face a mask of cold, devastating betrayal. The dark circles under his eyes made him look ten years older.
“Grace...” Daniel’s voice was hollow, filled with a deep, agonizing disappointment that cut Grace deeper than any insult could. “I trusted you with my daughter. I thought you were different.”
“Mr. Brooks, please listen to me,” Grace pleaded, stepping forward, though the police officers immediately moved to block her. “I didn't steal any jewelry! Those pieces were planted in my bag! Miss Vance’s driver, Marcus, came into the kitchen at midnight to retrieve that brown bottle!”
Evelyn let out a dramatic, sorrowful gasp. “Oh, listen to her! Now she’s accusing my loyal staff! Daniel, the girl is a pathological liar. She probably stole the medication from poor Nurse Henderson yesterday just to stage that whole dramatic scene and make herself look like a savior!”
“That’s enough,” the lead police officer said sternly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. “Grace Ellis, you are under arrest for grand larceny and possession of controlled substances. Put your hands behind your back.”
“No! Please!” Grace cried out, not out of fear for herself, but because she saw Lucy peeking out from behind the bed curtains.
Lucy’s eyes were wide with sheer terror. The little girl saw the metal handcuffs, saw the angry officers, and saw Evelyn’s cruel, victorious smile in the background.
“Daniel, look at that bottle!” Grace yelled as the officer grabbed her arm. “That bottle contains Chlorpromazine! It was being used to poison Lucy! Test it! Check the handwriting on the note!”
“Take her out of here,” Evelyn ordered the officers smoothly. “She’s upsetting the child.”
The officer twisted Grace’s arms behind her back, the cold steel of the handcuffs clicking sharply around her wrists.
As Grace was being dragged toward the bedroom doorway, the emotional dam that had held Lucy Brooks trapped in silence for nearly a year completely broke.
The little girl threw off her cashmere blanket.
She stood up on her tiny, trembling legs, rushed across the hardwood floor, and grabbed the hem of Grace’s navy dress with all her tiny might.

Tears streamed down Lucy’s flushed cheeks, and in front of the police officers, the estate staff, Evelyn, and her stunned father, the three-year-old child screamed at the top of her lungs:
“NO! BAD AUNTIE! BAD AUNTIE HURT MOMMY!”
