Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at the Gate

Vanessa thrust the heavy iron fire-poker through the six-inch gap under the rising security grate, jamming it straight into the primary hydraulic track.

CLANK!

The iron gears jammed instantly. The rising security grate shuddered violently and froze in place, stuck half a foot off the ground—just wide enough for a child to crawl through, but completely blocking an adult.

“Nobody leaves!” Vanessa screamed from the outside patio, her face streaked with soot and blood. She began pounding the heavy iron poker against the reinforced glass of the window, trying to shatter it. “You stay in there and burn!”

From inside the burning study, the heat was becoming lethal. Smoke hung thick down to waist height, making every breath feel like inhaling broken glass.

“Dan… take Lily!” Sarah choked out, falling to her knees as her oxygen-deprived lungs began to fail. “Push her under the grate! Save her!”

Daniel didn't hesitate. He grabbed Lily, laying her flat on her stomach on the cold floorboards.

“Lily, listen to me,” Daniel said, his eyes tearing up from the biting smoke. “Crawl under that bar. Run toward the red lights on the driveway. Do not look back. Do you understand me?”

“No, Daddy!” Lily wept, clutching his sleeves. “I’m not leaving you and Mommy!”

“Go, baby! Now!” Daniel commanded, gently pushing her small shoulders through the six-inch gap beneath the jammed iron bar.

Lily squirmed through the gap, spilling out onto the cold stone patio outside.

Vanessa saw the child emerge and immediately turned, raising the heavy iron poker above her head. “You little brat—”

Before Vanessa could bring the iron rod down, a blinding spotlight swept across the patio, locking onto her.

“STATE POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!” a stern voice boomed over a bullhorn from the driveway.

Four armed state troopers, flanked by tactical officers with shields, surged up the patio steps. Seeing the armed, unhinged woman about to strike a child, the lead officer fired a non-lethal taser projectile.

THWIP-BZZZZZT!

The electrified prongs struck Vanessa square in the back. She let out a sharp gasp, her muscles seizing instantly as fifty thousand volts coursed through her body. The iron poker clattered onto the stone tiles, and Vanessa collapsed helplessly onto her side, twitching as the officers tackled her to the ground and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

Inside the study, Daniel grabbed the heavy sledgehammer he had carried up from the basement storage room.

“Sarah, get down!” Daniel yelled.

He raised the sledgehammer above his head and brought it down with apocalyptic force onto the iron poker jammed in the hydraulic track.

BANG!

The iron rod snapped in half under the force of the strike. The jammed gears released with a loud metallic screech, and the heavy security grate shot upward into the ceiling housing, fully opening the exit.

Daniel grabbed Sarah in his arms, lifting her frail body clear of the floor, and plunged through the open window frame out into the cool night air.

They hit the stone patio just as the second-floor roof of the mansion collapsed inward with a massive roar, shooting a hundred-foot geyser of yellow flame into the dark night sky.
