Chapter 4 - The Betrayal of the Firm

The barrel of the 9mm pistol didn't move from Daniel’s forehead. The tension in the small, soundproof room was so suffocating that the only sound was the steady, slow beep-beep-beep of Sarah’s heart monitor.

“You won't shoot me, Vanessa,” Daniel said softly, taking another half-step forward. “If I die, you lose your legal access to the sterling estate. You need me alive to keep control of the board.”

Vanessa’s lips curled into a cold, cruel smirk. “That was true yesterday, my dear husband. But three weeks ago, you signed the updated living trust documents during your annual medical checkup. Remember those insurance papers my father brought to your office?”

Daniel’s stomach plummeted. “Arthur…”

“Yes. My father,” Vanessa said with a chilling sense of pride. “He drafted a clause stating that if you suffer an unexpected fatal accident, full guardianship of Lily—and complete execution rights over the Sterling Global enterprise—transfers directly to me as your surviving spouse. I don't need you anymore, Daniel. In fact, you’ve become a liability.”

From the bed, Sarah let out a weak, desperate gasp. “Dan… the documents… behind the monitor…”

Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward Sarah in a flash of blind rage. “Shut up, you ghost!”

That split-second distraction was all Daniel needed.

He lunged forward, grabbing Vanessa’s right wrist with both hands and shoving the barrel of the gun upward toward the concrete ceiling.

BANG!

A deafening shot shattered the air inside the tight space, sending a shower of sparks and hot plaster down from the ceiling. Lily screamed, dropping to her knees and covering her ears.

Daniel twisted Vanessa’s arm violently downward, using her own body weight against her. She gasped in pain as her wrist popped, her fingers opening up in reflex. The heavy handgun clattered to the concrete floor, sliding right to the edge of Sarah’s bed.

Vanessa shrieked, striking Daniel across the face with her free hand, her sharp nails digging into his jaw. But Daniel didn't flinch. He wrapped his arms around her waist, slamming her back against the steel doorframe of the vault, pinning her arms behind her.

“Lily!” Daniel yelled over the ringing in his ears. “Grab the phone! Run upstairs and lock yourself in the master bedroom!”

“No!” Vanessa screamed, struggling frantically against Daniel’s grip. “Don't let her leave!”

Before Lily could react, a deep, refined male voice echoed from the top of the basement stairs.

“I’m afraid nobody is going anywhere, Daniel.”

Footsteps descended the wooden stairs with slow, deliberate precision.

Stepping into the faint light of the basement was Arthur Pendelton—Daniel’s trusted family lawyer, his late father’s best friend, and Vanessa’s father. He was impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, holding a dark leather briefcase in his left hand and a heavy, silenced revolver in his right.

Arthur looked at the shattered plaster, the opened vault door, and his daughter pinned against the steel frame. He let out a long, weary sigh.

“I told you to increase her sedative dosage, Vanessa,” Arthur said, his tone devoid of any human warmth. “I told you this room wasn't secure enough once the child started wandering.”

“Father!” Vanessa cried out. “Help me! He knows everything!”

Arthur raised the silenced revolver, pointing it directly at Daniel’s chest.

“I know he knows, my dear,” Arthur said calmly. “Which means our timeline just got moved up by about two hours.”
