Chapter 5 - The Ledger in the Dark

Daniel didn't release his grip on Vanessa, using her body as a human shield between himself and Arthur’s gun.
“Arthur,” Daniel said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through his veins. “My father considered you a brother. He built your firm. He gave you equity in Sterling Global. How could you do this to his family?”
Arthur adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses with his free hand, a faint, condescending smile appearing on his aged face.
“Your father was a idealist, Daniel,” Arthur replied smoothly, taking two steps closer. “He believed in legacy, honor, and charity. Meanwhile, I was the one who hid his offshore liabilities, bypassed regulatory boards, and made sure his precious company actually made money. I built Sterling Global. Your father just put his family name on the stationery.”
“So you staged Sarah’s crash?” Daniel pressed, buying precious seconds as his mind raced for an escape route.
“Sarah was an accountant,” Arthur said, casting a dismissive glance toward the bed. “A very clever accountant. Three years ago, she started digging through the subsidiary tax filings. She found the forty million dollars I had systematically routed into my private holding firms in the Caymans. She came to me, threatening to take it to the SEC.”
“I didn't threaten you, Arthur,” Sarah’s weak, hoarse voice rose from the bed. She had managed to push herself into a sitting position, her eyes burning with intense hatred. “I gave you twenty-four hours to return the funds to the company treasury. You paid off the paramedic unit that responded to my crash. You declared me dead at the scene while I was still breathing!”
“And kept you comfortably alive for three years,” Arthur corrected gently. “Because you were the only one who possessed the private master encryption keys to those Cayman accounts. I needed your biometric clearance to unlock the final wire transfers. Sadly, your resistance has been remarkably stubborn.”
Arthur shifted his gun three inches to the left, aiming directly at Lily, who was huddled near the corner of the wall.
“However,” Arthur continued softly, “now that little Lily is here, I suspect Sarah will prove far more cooperative with those biometric keys.”
Daniel felt a jolt of pure horror strike his spine. “Don't you dare touch my daughter!”
“Then release Vanessa, step away from the vault, and let us finish our business, Daniel,” Arthur commanded, his finger tightening against the trigger of the silenced revolver. “Or I put a round through the child’s knee right now.”
In the shadow of the hospital bed, Sarah’s hand silently crept toward the floorboards.
Her thin fingers brushed against the sleek metal of the 9mm pistol that had fallen during Daniel’s struggle with Vanessa. Unnoticed by Arthur, whose attention was locked entirely on Daniel and Lily, Sarah pulled the weapon under her white linen sheets.
“Arthur,” Daniel said loudly, drawing all eyes to himself as he slowly let go of Vanessa and took a step back. “Take the money. Take every single cent in the accounts. Just let me take my daughter and walk out of this house.”
Vanessa stumbled forward, holding her sprained wrist, her face twisted in venomous triumph. “It’s too late for that, Daniel. You saw the door. You saw her. You don't get to walk away.”
“She’s right, Daniel,” Arthur said regretfully. “There are no clean exits left.”
Arthur aimed the barrel straight at Daniel’s heart and began to squeeze the trigger.
