Chapter 8 - The Breach

Daniel ran to the base of the grand bronze statue. It sat on a wheeled marble pedestal—a decorative design choice his father had made years ago to allow the heavy piece to be moved during formal galas.
He grabbed the edges of the marble base, planting his boots against the slick floor.
“Dan!” Sarah screamed. “The ceiling is coming down!”
A massive wooden beam from the second-floor ceiling snapped with a sound like a cannon shot, crashing down onto the staircase in a shower of brilliant yellow sparks and roaring fire. The heat radiated across the foyer, blistering the paint on the walls.
With a primal scream, Daniel put every ounce of strength in his body into shoving the two-ton bronze monument.
The heavy iron casters beneath the base groaned, breaking free from years of dust, and began to roll. Daniel pushed harder, sprinting behind the rolling statue as it gathered momentum across the polished marble floor.
The statue surged forward like a battering ram, heading straight for the reinforced double oak doors of the study.
THUNDER-CRASH!
The solid bronze head of the statue hit the center seam of the oak doors at twenty miles an hour. The deadbolts snapped like dried twigs, the heavy wooden doors exploding inward into a thousand flying splinters.
“Inside! Go!” Daniel yelled, turning back to grab Sarah and Lily.
He scooped Lily into his arms and hauled Sarah through the smoke and splinters, plunging into the relative safety of the executive study.
The study was already filling with thin white smoke, but the structural fire hadn't breached the heavy brick walls yet. Located on the far side of the room was the master security console—a wall of monitors and heavy mechanical breaker switches.
Sarah rushed to the console, her thin fingers flying over the emergency manual controls. She grabbed two red steel levers set low into the wall frame.
“I can’t pull them both!” Sarah gasped, her weak arm trembling under the resistance of the rusted hydraulic valves. “They need eighty pounds of force each!”
Daniel set Lily down behind the heavy mahogany desk. “Lily, stay right here!”
He stepped up beside Sarah, gripping the right hydraulic lever while she held the left.
“On three!” Daniel shouted, the sound of the roaring fire right outside the study doors growing deafening. “One… two… THREE!”
Together, they threw their full body weight down onto the iron levers.
The rusty hydraulic pumps groaned deep within the walls. High-pressure fluid hissed through the pipes as the mechanical gears began to turn.
Outside the study windows, the massive iron security grates began to slowly, agonizingly grind upward.
One inch. Three inches. Six inches.
Through the gap beneath the iron bars, Daniel saw the cool blue glow of flashing emergency lights filtering through the night trees. Sirens were wailing in the distance, getting closer by the second.
Lily’s eyes lit up through her tears. “Daddy! Look! The police!”

Before they could slide beneath the rising metal grate, a shadow blocked the moonlight streaming through the window gap.
Vanessa stood on the patio outside, holding an iron fire-poker she had grabbed from the garden shed, her eyes black with insane, murderous rage.
