Chapter 9 - The Results That Shattered Everything

The service corridor was cold, echoing with the sound of heavy tactical boots advancing down the concrete stairs.

Harold Vance rounded the corner, flanked by two private security mercenaries with tasers and sidearms drawn.

“Jonathan Sterling!” Harold Vance called out, his voice echoing off the cinderblock walls. “Stand down! We have an emergency court order signed by Judge Bennett granting immediate protective custody of Emma Sterling to the estate! You are under arrest for felony custodial interference!”

Jonathan stood in the center of the hallway, broad-shouldered and unyielding like an iron pillar.

“You’re serving a forged warrant for two child traffickers, Vance,” Jonathan said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “Turn around and walk out of here while you still have a law license.”

“Take him down!” Vance ordered the two guards.

The first guard lunged forward with a high-voltage taser. Jonathan sidestepped the projectile prongs, grabbed the guard’s outstretched arm, and slammed him face-first into the cinderblock wall. The guard collapsed, unconscious.

The second guard drew his baton, swinging viciously at Jonathan’s head. Jonathan blocked the strike with his forearm, stepped inside the guard’s stance, and delivered a devastating knee to his midsection, followed by a sweeping leg takedown that sent the guard crashing onto the concrete floor.

Harold Vance turned pale, dropping his leather briefcase and backing toward the stairs. “You’re insane! You’re assaulting officers of the court!”

Behind Jonathan, the heavy laboratory door clicked open.

Dr. Sarah Miller stepped out into the hallway, holding a certified, embossed laboratory report in her hands. Her face was pale with shock, her hands trembling.

“Jonathan...” Sarah called out, her voice shaking with an emotion Jonathan had never heard from the hardened scientist.

Jonathan turned, his breathing heavy. “Did it confirm Elena?”

“Yes,” Sarah said, her voice trembling. “Elena Vance is Emma’s biological mother with a 99.999% statistical certainty.”

“Then we have what we need,” Jonathan said, reaching for the papers.

“Wait, Jonathan,” Sarah stopped him, looking directly into his eyes. “There’s something else. Something none of us anticipated.”

Jonathan frowned. “What are you talking about?”

Sarah pointed to the secondary familial lineage breakdown on the bottom of the page.

“When Celeste and Richard orchestrated this kidnapping six years ago, they told you Emma was your deceased brother David’s child from an affair, right?”

“Yes,” Jonathan said.

“They lied about David being the father... but they didn't pick Elena Vance at random,” Sarah revealed, her voice dropping to a stunned whisper. “Elena’s mother—who passed away twenty years ago—was your late mother’s estranged half-sister. Elena Vance is your biological first cousin.”

Jonathan stopped breathing. The world spun violently around him.

“What?” Jonathan gasped.

“Emma isn't a random child, Jonathan,” Sarah explained, tears welling in her eyes. “Emma is your legitimate, biological first-cousin-once-removed! She carries the true, unbroken Sterling bloodline through your mother’s lineage! Even without Celeste or Richard, Emma is the sole legal and biological heir to Grandfather Sterling’s seventy-million-dollar trust under the original terms of the will!”

Jonathan stared at the genetic markers on the paper.

Celeste and Richard had searched the country six years ago to find a pregnant girl who shared the Sterling genetic markers to ensure that if a DNA test was ever conducted on Emma, the Sterling bloodline would show up. They had preyed upon Jonathan’s own long-lost family member, stolen her baby, and handed the child to Jonathan to raise.

The monstrous cruelty of their plan was beyond comprehension.

They hadn't just stolen a child. They had torn apart Jonathan’s own blood family for seventy million dollars.

Jonathan looked up, his eyes burning with a righteous, unstoppable fury that could level mountains.

“Get Elena and Emma,” Jonathan said to Sarah, his voice steady as iron. “We’re going to the courthouse. Right now.”
