Chapter 12 - The Surprise Witness Takes the Stand

Jonathan didn't waste a single second. He stepped up to the podium and opened the manila folder.
“Six years ago, on October 14th, nineteen-year-old Elena Vance gave birth to a healthy baby girl at St. Jude Memorial Hospital,” Jonathan stated, his voice echoing with devastating emotional power. “That same night, Celeste Sterling and Richard Sterling paid Dr. Robert Harrison two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to tell this mother her child had died.”
A wave of gasps rippled through the gallery.
“That’s an outrageous slander!” Harold Vance shouted, jumping to his feet. “There is zero proof of these absurd allegations!”
“We call our first witness,” Jonathan announced calmly. “Martha Higgins.”
The elderly housekeeper walked up to the witness stand, raising her trembling right hand and swearing on the Bible.
Martha turned to the judge, her voice clear and resonant. “For six years, I worked inside the Sterling Estate. On the night of October 15th, six years ago, I personally witnessed Celeste Sterling and Richard Sterling bring an infant into the private study. I heard them discussing the forged death certificate. Celeste laughed and said, ‘The stupid girl thinks her baby is in an incinerator. The seventy-million-dollar trust is ours now.’ They threatened to have my son fired from his state job if I ever spoke a word.”
Celeste’s defense attorney turned pale, frantically scribbling notes.
“Next,” Jonathan continued, “we submit into evidence Exhibit A: The original, handwritten confidential ledger of Dr. Robert Harrison, recovered from his private residence, containing the carbon copy of the forged fetal death certificate and the matching offshore bank transfer routing numbers.”
Jonathan laid the heavy black book on the clerk’s desk.
“And Exhibit B,” Jonathan pressed the play button on the digital recorder.
Celeste’s voice echoed through the high-ceilinged courtroom, crystal clear:
“I don't care how you do it, Robert. Tell that stupid nineteen-year-old girl her baby suffocated. The Sterling Trust requires an heir... Here is your two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”
Celeste covered her face with her trembling hands, letting out a ragged, terrified sob.
“And finally, Your Honor,” Jonathan said, turning to Dr. Sarah Miller. “Exhibit C: Certified State Forensic DNA Sequencing Results.”
Dr. Sarah Miller stepped forward to the podium.
“Under my direct supervision at the State Forensic Genetics Institute, we conducted a 24-locus STR genetic profile. The results establish with 99.999% certainty that Elena Vance is the biological mother of Emma. Furthermore, the analysis proves that Emma is the biological first-cousin-once-removed of Jonathan Sterling, confirming her absolute, unchallengeable status as the sole rightful heir to the Sterling Family Trust.”
The gallery erupted into absolute pandemonium. Reporters were typing furiously on laptops; spectators were openly weeping.
Judge Bennett looked down at the documents on his desk, his hands shaking. He looked at Celeste Sterling, who was slumped in her chair, a hollow, broken shell of a woman.
“Mrs. Sterling,” Judge Bennett said, his voice trembling with disgust. “Do you have any explanation for these records?”
Celeste slowly lifted her head. Her eyes were vacant, her face devoid of all hope.

She looked across the courtroom at Emma, who was sitting safely in Elena’s lap, holding her mother’s hand tightly.
“It was supposed to be mine...” Celeste whispered, her voice cracking. “The money was supposed to be mine...”
