Chapter 5 - The Midnight Ambush

“How did they track us here?” Elena panicked, rushing to scoop Emma into her arms. “You said nobody knew about this cabin!”

“The SUV,” Jonathan realized with a curse. “The company vehicle has a built-in fleet GPS tracker. Richard must have pulled the satellite feed directly from the logistics server.”

Outside, a loudspeaker crackled to life.

“Jonathan Sterling! This is private security acting under the direct authority of the Sterling Estate Trustees!” a harsh voice boomed through the trees. “You are harboring a kidnapped child and stolen property! Step out with your hands above your head, or we will breach the premises by force!”

Emma began to cry, burying her face into Elena’s shoulder. “Daddy, I’m scared!”

“I know, baby. I’ve got you,” Jonathan said calmly, his mind working at lightning speed. He walked quickly to the back corner of the cabin, lifting a heavy wool rug to reveal a hidden wooden trapdoor in the floorboards.

“Grandfather built an underground root cellar that connects to an old drainage tunnel leading out to the ravine behind the ridge,” Jonathan explained, pulling the latch open. “It exits about three hundred yards down the mountain, near the old logging trail.”

Jonathan grabbed the burnt-orange envelope and the two silver lockets, shoving them into the inner pocket of his leather jacket. He turned to Elena.

“Take Emma and go down first,” Jonathan commanded. “Follow the pipe until you see daylight. Do not stop running until you hit the old highway.”

“What about you?” Elena grabbed his sleeve, her eyes wide with terror. “You can’t fight all of them alone!”

“I’m right behind you,” Jonathan promised. “I just need to buy us sixty seconds.”

BANG! BANG!

The front door shook violently under the impact of a heavy battering ram. The wooden frame splintered with a sickening crunch.

“Go! Now!” Jonathan urged.

Elena kissed Emma’s forehead, climbed down the wooden ladder into the dark tunnel, and pulled the child down with her. Jonathan lowered the heavy trapdoor, kicking the wool rug back over the wood to conceal the seam.

Jonathan grabbed a heavy iron fire poker from the hearth and stood in the shadows beside the front entrance.

CRACK!

The front door burst inward, sending wood shards flying across the living room. Two private security operatives in tactical gear rushed through the threshold, weapons raised.

“Clear left!” one shouted.

Before he could turn right, Jonathan swung the heavy iron poker with crushing momentum. The steel rod struck the first guard’s tactical helmet, knocking him sideways into the wall, completely disorienting him.

Jonathan stepped inside the second guard’s reach, grabbing the barrel of his sidearm, twisting the weapon out of his grip, and delivering a devastating palm strike to the man’s sternum. The guard gasped for air, collapsing to his knees.

Richard Sterling stepped through the broken doorway, holding a silver revolver in his trembling, bandaged hand.

“You arrogant bastard!” Richard screamed, raising the gun toward Jonathan’s chest. “Where is the girl?!”

Jonathan didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy wooden coffee table and flipped it violently toward Richard.

The heavy oak furniture struck Richard’s legs, knocking him off balance. The gun fired wildly into the ceiling, the bullet lodging in the cedar rafters with a deafening boom. Richard crashed to the floor, howling in pain as his freshly set jaw slammed against the hardwood.

Jonathan didn't waste another second. He bolted across the room, ripped open the trapdoor, and dropped into the darkness below, slamming the hatch shut from the inside and throwing the heavy iron bolt lock.

He sprinted through the damp, narrow concrete tunnel, his boots splashing through shallow mountain runoff.

Two minutes later, Jonathan burst out of the drainage pipe into the blinding sunlight of the ravine. Fifty yards ahead, Elena was running through the dense pine trees, carrying Emma securely in her arms.

“Elena!” Jonathan called out.

She turned, letting out a sob of relief when she saw him emerging from the tree line unharmed.

Jonathan caught up to them, taking Emma into his arms to relieve Elena’s exhausted muscles. “There’s an old logging road half a mile down this ridge. My friend Marcus runs an independent auto repair shop near the state line. If we can reach him, we can get an untraceable car.”

As they ran through the dense woods, the sound of security sirens and shouting guards echoed far behind them on the mountain ridge.

The Sterling family had thrown their first punch.

Now, Jonathan and Elena were about to deliver the blow that would destroy them forever.
