Chapter 13 - Handcuffs in the Gallery

Judge Bennett lifted his heavy gavel and brought it down with a thunderous, decisive crash that echoed like a canon shot through the courtroom.

BANG!

“This court finds the emergency petition filed by Celeste Sterling to be wholly fraudulent, malicious, and built upon criminal enterprise!” Judge Bennett declared, his voice ringing with righteous fury. “The emergency pickup order against Jonathan Sterling is hereby vacated with prejudice! Full, immediate, and sole temporary legal and physical custody of the minor child, Emma, is awarded to her biological mother, Elena Vance, with joint guardianship privileges granted to Jonathan Sterling!”

Elena burst into tears of overwhelming relief, pulling Emma tightly into her arms. Emma buried her face into Elena’s neck, whispering, “We won, Mommy! We won!”

Jonathan closed his eyes, exhaling a long, trembling breath as six years of tension, fear, and sorrow melted away from his chest.

Suddenly, the double doors at the back of the courtroom opened once more.

Four federal marshals marched down the aisle, escorting Richard Sterling. Richard’s hands were cuffed behind his back, his clothes torn, his bandaged jaw bloody, and his eyes wild with defeat after his failed highway escape.

Special Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. He walked directly over to Celeste Sterling’s table.

“Celeste Sterling,” Agent Miller announced loudly, his voice carrying over the entire room. “You are under arrest by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, interstate wire fraud, healthcare fraud, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent.”

CLICK. CLICK.

The cold steel cuffs snapped around Celeste’s manicured wrists.

The gallery erupted into a frenzy of camera flashes as Celeste was pulled to her feet. For the first time in her pampered, arrogant life, Celeste Sterling was paraded before the public in chains, her designer clothes rumpled, her head hanging in total, irreversible disgrace.

As she was led down the center aisle, she passed directly by Jonathan, Elena, and Emma.

Celeste stopped for a split second, looking at Emma with bitter tears streaming down her face.

Emma looked back at her. The six-year-old girl didn't flinch. She didn't cry. She simply reached down, grabbed Jonathan’s hand with her left fingers, and grabbed Elena’s hand with her right.

“Goodbye, Aunt Celeste,” Emma said softly.

Celeste choked on a sob as the federal agents pushed her through the doors, leading her and Richard away to face decades behind the cold iron bars of a federal penitentiary.

The nightmare was finally over.
