Chapter 3 - Bullets Through the Shattered Glass

I kicked the door open with enough force to splinter the frame.
Inside, two men dressed in tactical black were pinning Evelyn to the floor, one holding a gloved hand over her mouth while the other raised a suppressed pistol to her temple.
Her eyes met mine in the darkness—wide, terrified, pleading.
My instincts took over before thought could interfere.
Pfft. Pfft.
Two suppressed rounds left my barrel. The man holding the pistol dropped instantly, a clean hole blooming between his eyes. The second assailant shoved Evelyn toward me as a human shield and lunged with a combat knife.
I stepped into his guard, caught his wrist, and twisted until the bone snapped with a sickening crack. He gasped, but before he could scream, I drove my heel into his knee, driving him to the floor, and pressed the muzzle against his jaw.
“Who sent you?” I growled.
The man smiled, blood pooling across his teeth. Before I could interrogate him further, he crunched down on a cyanide capsule sewn into his collar. His body convulsed once, twice, and went limp.
“Professional cleaners,” Dante said, appearing in the doorway with his weapon drawn, scanning the corridor.
Evelyn was huddled against the base of the bed, her breathing ragged, her white nightshirt stained with dust and a splatter of dark crimson. She was shivering uncontrollably.
I holstered my weapon and knelt beside her.
“Look at me, Evelyn,” I commanded, keeping my voice low and steady.
She looked up, tears cutting tracks through the dust on her cheeks. “They... they came through the balcony. They said they were here to finish what was started in ninety-eight.”
My jaw tightened until my teeth ached.
“They know who you are,” I said, extending a hand to help her up. “The moment you stepped into my estate today, someone triggered an alarm on the outside.”
She grabbed my hand. Her fingers were ice-cold, but her grip was desperate.
“Who am I, Adrien?” she demanded, her voice cracking under the weight of sheer panic. “Tell me the truth! Why are men breaking into this house to kill me?”
“Because your father was Julian Vance,” I said plainly. “And you are the heir to half the financial secrets that hold this city’s underworld together.”
She stared at me in stunned silence, her chest heaving. The reality crashed over her like a tidal wave.
“My mother... she spent her whole life running,” Evelyn whispered, tears spilling over. “She never let us stay in one town for more than two years. She worked three jobs under fake names. She destroyed every trace of her past... to protect me from this.”
“Your mother did what she had to do,” I said, pulling her gently to her feet and wrapping my coat around her shivering shoulders. “And now, I am going to finish what my father started. No one touches you while you are under my roof.”
She looked into my eyes, searching for certainty in a world that had just collapsed beneath her feet.

“You can’t fight shadows, Mr. Voss.”
“I don't fight shadows, Evelyn,” I replied coldly. “I own the night.”
