Chapter 2 - A Name Erased from the Ledger

The rain had turned into a torrential downpour by three in the morning.

I sat in the subterranean archive beneath the Voss estate, surrounded by steel filing cabinets and humidity-controlled vaults that held fifty years of syndicate transactions. Beside me stood Dante, my head of security and the only man alive who knew where every body was buried.

“Her real name isn’t Evelyn Hart, is it?” Dante asked, blowing smoke toward the ventilation grille.

“Her mother was Clara Vance,” I replied, staring at a decrypted terminal screen. “Vance. As in Julian Vance.”

Dante stopped breathing for two full seconds. The cigar in his fingers hovered motionless.

“Julian Vance? The syndicate’s chief treasurer before the great schism in ninety-eight?”

“The very same,” I said grimly. “When Julian died in what was called a ‘freak yacht explosion,’ his wife and daughter vanished off the face of the earth. Everyone in the underworld assumed they went down with the vessel. But my father didn't kill them. He extracted them. He gave them new identities, forged birth certificates, and sent them into the wind.”

“Why would your father risk a blood war to save the treasurer’s family?” Dante asked, leaning over the monitor.

“Because Julian Vance didn't die by accident,” I answered, tapping the keyboard to bring up the missing ledgers. “He was assassinated because he discovered an internal conspiracy to overthrow my father. And Julian had documented every offshore account, every bribe, and every traitor on a set of encrypted drive keys before he went down.”

The pieces were assembling into a terrifying puzzle. Julian Vance had died trying to protect my father’s empire. In return, my father had hidden Julian’s widow and child, keeping Evelyn completely ignorant of her own heritage so she would never become a target.

“Does she know who she is?” Dante asked.

“She knows nothing,” I said, rising to my feet and buttoning my suit jacket. “She thinks she’s just an orphan from upstate New York whose mother lived in terror of shadows. But if someone in the syndicate discovers she’s working in my office, they won't stop until she’s dead.”

“What’s the play, boss?”

“We double her security without her noticing. And I find out who ordered Julian Vance’s execution twenty-five years ago.”

I took the service elevator back up to the main penthouse floor. The estate was dead quiet, save for the rhythmic patter of rain against the reinforced glass. As I walked down the carpeted hallway toward the guest quarters where I had instructed Evelyn to stay for the night, an unnatural chill swept down the corridor.

The red indicator light on the perimeter security panel was blinking.

Silence. Not the peaceful silence of an empty mansion, but the suffocating stillness that precedes violence.

I reached beneath my tailored armpit and drew my custom Glock 19, thumbing the safety off in a smooth, practiced motion.

I approached Evelyn’s door. It was slightly ajar.

A faint scuffle echoed from within.
