Chapter 8 - The Shadow Syndicate Revealed

The revelation hung in the library air like gunpowder smoke after a duel.
Declan stared at Sadie—at Alessandra Moretti—feeling an unprecedented clash of fury, betrayal, and raw, undeniable admiration tearing through his chest.
For three years, the most valuable heiress on the East Coast, a woman carrying the cryptographic keys to hundreds of millions in offshore assets and the secret history of the five families, had sat ten feet outside his office door, organizing his tax audits and screening his phone calls.
“Why now?” Declan asked, his voice low and raspy. “Why did Victor strike now?”
Sadie stood up from the armchair, walking toward the grand windows that looked out over the dark pine forests of the estate.
“Because the probate lock expires on my thirty-first birthday,” Sadie said, watching the moonlight reflect off the glass. “In seventy-two hours. Under the old syndicate charter established by your grandfather and mine, if the direct heir does not claim the Aegis Holdings trusts before the thirty-first year, the entire asset pool defaults to the surviving secondary line. Victor.”
“That’s over four hundred million dollars in liquid offshore capital and twenty-five percent of the deep-water port leases,” Leo said, whistling through his teeth. “With that kind of money, Victor can buy enough private military muscle to wipe out every syndicate from Boston to Miami.”
“Including the Hayes family,” Sadie added, turning back to Declan. “Victor doesn't just want the money. He wants the docks back. He hired Greg to locate the original 1994 escrow agreement in your corporate archives to verify whether the Hayes family still held the co-signatory rights. When I caught Greg copying the files, he realized who I was.”
Declan walked up behind her, stopping inches away. He could see her reflection in the window—her high cheekbones, the aristocratic curve of her jaw, the fierce intelligence burning behind her dark eyes.
“You used me, Sadie,” Declan murmured.
“I protected myself,” she countered softly. “And tonight, in that basement, I protected you.”
“You saved my life so you could use my army to fight your uncle.”
Sadie turned to face him, looking up into his rugged, hardened features. “I came to you because you’re the only man in this city strong enough to stand against Victor. And because, despite the ruthless reputation you cultivate, Declan... your grandfather was an honorable man. And I believed you might be one too.”
Declan felt a sudden, violent pull in his chest. Her words pierced through the cynical armor he had worn for a decade.
“Leo,” Declan ordered without looking away from Sadie’s eyes.
“Yeah, boss?”
“Summon the captains. All six district commanders. I want every soldier we have mobilized by midnight. Put a total lockdown on the port terminals, the rail yards, and the private airfields.”
Leo grinned, a savage, hungry expression crossing his face. “We going to war?”
“We’re going to hunt a traitor,” Declan said coldly. “Victor Moretti broke the bloodline pact twenty-five years ago. It’s time the Hayes family settled the debt.”
“On it,” Leo barked, heading for the library doors.
As the heavy oak doors closed behind Leo, Declan stepped closer to Sadie, closing the space between them until their bodies were nearly touching.
He raised his right hand, his rough thumb gently brushing against the small crescent birthmark below her collarbone.
Sadie’s breath hitched, her eyes widening slightly at the unexpected tenderness of his touch.
“For three years, I thought you were the only peaceful thing in my violent life, Sadie,” Declan whispered, his voice thick with raw, suppressed emotion. “Turns out you were the most dangerous creature in the room all along.”
“Are you going to kill me, Declan?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper, her eyes locked on his.

Declan’s fingers moved up to cup the side of her neck, feeling the rapid, frantic beat of her pulse beneath his palm.
“No,” Declan said, his gaze dropping to her lips before rising back to meet her eyes. “I’m going to keep you alive. Even if I have to burn this entire city to the ground to do it.”
