Chapter 13 - Secrets of the Bloodline

Inside the vault, rows of safety deposit boxes, bearer bond certificates, and gold bullion bullion crates sat untouched beneath preservation lights.
In the center of the chamber stood a glass pedestal holding two leather-bound ledgers stamped with the joined crests of the Hayes and Moretti families.
Sadie walked into the vault, her boots leaving faint traces of soot on the pristine floor. She reached out with trembling fingers and touched the cover of the ledgers.
Declan walked in behind her, his footsteps quiet. He stood beside her, looking down at the documents that had caused twenty-five years of bloodshed and subterfuge.
“This was what my father died to protect,” Sadie whispered, opening the first volume.
Inside were handwritten agreements signed by Arthur Hayes and Anthony Moretti in 1990. But as Declan read the faded cursive, his eyes widened with shock.
The documents were not just commercial port allocations or trust agreements.
They were a merger of bloodlines.
“In the event of an existential threat to either house,” the document read in Arthur Hayes’s bold handwriting, “the holdings of Hayes and Moretti shall merge into a single unbreakable entity, to be governed jointly by the surviving heirs of both bloodlines upon their union.”
Declan stared at the yellowed parchment, then looked at Sadie.
“Our grandfathers didn't just build a financial partnership,” Declan said softly. “They arranged a union.”
Sadie looked up at him, a faint blush warming her pale cheeks despite the soot and adrenaline. “My father never told me. He hid the ledgers before the fire to ensure Victor could never force a claim.”
“They intended for our families to rule this city together,” Declan murmured, stepping closer to her.
Outside the vault door, Leo and two guards hauled Victor Moretti to his feet in heavy zip-ties.
“What do we do with him, boss?” Leo called out.
Declan turned, his expression hardening back into that of the undisputed syndicate ruler.
“Hand him over to the federal prosecutors along with the decrypted Cyprus transaction logs,” Declan ordered. “Let him spend the rest of his life in a supermax facility knowing that every asset he tried to steal now belongs to the woman he tried to destroy.”
“You got it, boss,” Leo grinned, dragging the cursing traitor down the corridor.
Silence settled over the vault chamber.
Declan turned back to Sadie. He looked at her stained tactical gear, the sharp cut of her jaw, the fierce, brilliant fire in her dark eyes.
“Alessandra Moretti,” Declan said, his voice rich and deep. “Heiress of the eastern docks, master cryptographer, and the woman who threw a pair of office shears into my enemy’s throat.”
Sadie smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that completely transformed her face.
“Are you firing me, Mr. Hayes?” she asked playfully.
Declan reached out, his strong hands gently resting on her hips, pulling her against his chest.
“Your career as my secretary is officially over,” Declan murmured, looking down at her lips. “From now on, you sit across the boardroom table from me. As my partner.”
“Just business partners?” Sadie asked, tilting her chin up, her eyes challenging him.

Declan’s dark eyes softened with an intensity that took her breath away.
“Not just business,” Declan whispered, and lowered his mouth to hers.
