Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Traitor Among Chicago's Elite

The next morning, the penthouse was locked down under military-grade security. While restoration crews boarded up the shattered glass, Mara and I gathered in the fortified subterranean war room beneath the tower.
On the digital display screens, financial trails, satellite feeds, and corporate manifests glowed in high-definition blue.
"Wexler didn't act alone," Mara said, tapping a stylus against the interactive screen. "To bypass the airspace radar over your building and deploy a private chopper, he needed clearance from the Municipal Aviation Authority. That kind of clearance requires a signature from someone inside your inner circle."
Finn pulled up the authorization logs. "Only three people on the city board had that level of override access. Mayor’s office, Port Authority Director... and Arthur Sterling."
I felt a cold rage settle in my gut. Arthur Sterling had been my father’s closest business partner for thirty years. He sat on the executive board of my foundation. He had held me as an infant.
"Sterling is hosting an exclusive black-tie charity auction tonight at the Drake Hotel," I said, my jaw clenching. "An invitation-only event for the wealthiest fifty families in the Midwest."
"He thinks you're dead or hiding in a bunker," Mara said, stepping closer to the console. "If we show up announced, he’ll run to his handlers in the Obsidian Syndicate. But if we infiltrate as guests, we can intercept the encrypted hard drive he uses to transfer the foundation’s assets."
"We can't just walk in with guns," Finn warned. "Sterling’s personal security detail is tighter than Fort Knox."
"We don't need guns to steal data," Mara said, a subtle, confident spark igniting in her eyes. "We just need a distraction."
She looked at me. "Can you play the role of an arrogant, lovesick billionaire who only cares about his new companion?"
"I don't think I'll have to act very hard," I replied smoothly, holding her gaze until a faint blush brushed her cheeks.
Eight hours later, the Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of bespoke tuxedos, vintage champagne, and glittering diamonds.
When the double doors opened, every head in the room turned.
I walked in with Mara on my arm. This time, she wasn't hiding in the shadows.
She wore an emerald silk backless gown that hugged every curve of her body, her dark hair cascading in soft waves over one shoulder. Around her neck sat a three-million-dollar flawless Cartier emerald necklace from my family’s private vault.
She was breathtaking—a vision of pure, lethal elegance.
Arthur Sterling was standing near the central auction podium, laughing with a senator, when he saw us. The champagne glass in his hand slipped, shattering against the parquet floor.
"Dante..." Sterling stammered as we approached, his face draining of all color. "I... we heard there was an incident at your residence. Rumors were flying..."
"Just a minor security drill, Arthur," I said, offering a cold, razor-sharp smile. "I wouldn't miss your auction for the world. In fact, I brought Ms. Vale. She has an exquisite eye for valuable acquisitions."
Mara stepped forward, offering a dazzling, disarming smile as she extended her gloved hand to Sterling. "Mr. Sterling. Dante talks about you constantly. He says you're practically family."
As Sterling nervously kissed her hand, Mara’s left hand brushed against his tuxedo lapel with feather-light dexterity, cloning the biometric RFID keycard nestled in his breast pocket in under two seconds.

She caught my eye and gave a nearly imperceptible nod.
The hunt was on.
