Chapter 15 - The Ring She Finally Decided to Wear and Forever After

One year later.
The private botanical gardens on my family's historic estate on the North Shore were bathed in golden spring sunlight. White roses, lilacs, and cherry blossoms bloomed in breathtaking profusion, surrounding two hundred close friends, pediatric researchers, and security personnel who had become our family.
Finn stood beside me near the flower-draped altar, adjusting his bow tie and grinning broadly.
"You ready for this, boss?" Finn whispered. "No body armor this time."
"I've never been more ready in my life," I replied, my heart pounding with pure, unadulterated joy.
The string quartet began to play a soft, classical melody as the heavy oak garden doors opened.
Every guest stood up and turned.
Mara walked down the aisle on the arm of the pediatric hospital’s chief surgeon—a man whose life's work she had protected.
She was magnificent. Her wedding gown was pure ivory silk, custom-designed with long, lace sleeves and an open back, trailing gracefully across the carpet of white petals. Her dark hair was pinned up with delicate white blossoms.
Her neck was bare. Her ears were bare. Her wrists were bare.
She walked with that same unmistakable, lethal grace, but her eyes were filled with warmth, tenderness, and absolute certainty as they locked onto mine.
When she reached the altar, she took my hands into hers. Her skin was warm, her pulse steady, and her smile illuminated my entire world.
The minister spoke the traditional vows, but when it came time for the rings, I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out a velvet box.
Inside sat a custom-crafted platinum band holding an exquisite, rare green emerald diamond—a symbol of the woman who had seen through the darkness and brought light back into my life.
I looked into her eyes. "Mara, you spent your life avoiding jewelry because it made too much noise. But I promise you, this ring will only ever whisper one thing: that you will never have to fight alone again."
Tears of pure happiness glistened in Mara's eyes.
She held out her left hand. "For you, Dante... I'll wear it forever."
I slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the minister declared. "You may kiss the bride."
I pulled Mara into my arms, dipping her slightly as I kissed her amidst the deafening cheers and applause of the crowd.
She kissed me back with all the passion, fire, and strength that made her who she was—my protector, my equal, my love, and my wife.
As we walked back down the aisle together, hand in hand, the emerald ring sparkled brilliantly in the warm afternoon sun.
For the first time in her life, Mara Vale wasn't looking for the exits.

She had finally found home.
