Chapter 5 - The Glass Penthouse Ambush and the Midnight Firefight

The chase erupted into chaos on Lake Shore Drive.
The two black Suburbans slammed into our security escort, sending sparks cascading across the asphalt like fireworks. Gunfire echoed through the freezing night as automatic rounds tore into the Maybach’s bulletproof glass, spider-webbing the reinforced polycarbonate.
"Hold on!" our driver shouted, spinning the steering wheel and slamming the heavy armored sedan through the security gates of my private residential high-rise.
The heavy steel gates crashed shut behind us, cutting off the pursuing vehicles, but as the elevator whisked Mara, Finn, and me up to the 60th-floor penthouse, the building's emergency lights suddenly flashed amber.
"They're on the roof!" Finn yelled, checking his tactical wrist monitor. "Helicopter insertion! They bypassed the ground perimeter entirely!"
The moment the elevator doors opened into the sprawling, two-story glass penthouse, the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows shattered inward in a violent hail of glass and flashbang grenades.
The concussion blast tore through the living room, throwing Finn against a marble pillar. Four black-clad mercenaries rappelled down from the roof overhang, weapons blazing.
I grabbed Mara by the waist, pulling her behind a reinforced kitchen island just as a volley of 7.62mm rounds shredded the custom Italian sofa and exploded the liquor cabinet into a thousand crystal shards.
"Finn! Suppressive fire on the left flank!" I shouted, leaning around the granite counter and firing three controlled bursts, dropping the lead operator in the foyer.
Mara didn't stay behind cover. She slid across the polished hardwood floor, grabbed the dropped assault rifle of the downed gunman, rolled onto her back, and fired a precise triple-tap upward through the shattered ceiling skylight.
A second assassin fell through the opening, crashing lifeless onto the glass dining table.
"Two more on the balcony!" Mara yelled over the deafening roar of gunfire.
A grenade landed with a dull clink on the rug five feet from where I knelt.
"Dante, down!" Mara screamed.
She didn't run away. She threw herself straight at me, tackling me behind the reinforced steel corner of the pantry just as the grenade detonated. The shockwave rattled my teeth, showering us in plaster dust and splintered wood.
For a brief, breathless second, we were pressed tightly against each other in the dark, her body trembling with adrenaline, her heart hammering against my chest. Her scent—a mix of subtle jasmine and sharp cordite—filled my senses.
"You okay?" I breathed, my hand instinctively resting on the nape of her neck to protect her.
Her gray-green eyes burned in the darkness. "I’m fine. But your furniture is completely ruined."
"I can buy new furniture," I said, a dangerous grin spreading across my face. "Let’s finish these bastards."
Together, moving in lethal synchronicity, we swept out from the pantry. Mara laid down suppressing fire, forcing the remaining two mercenaries behind the balcony pillars, while I flanked from the right stairwell. Two clean shots ended the ambush.
Silence returned to the high-rise, save for the bitter November wind howling through the blown-out windows, scattering billionaire art and broken glass across the bloody floor.
Finn limped over, clutching a bruised shoulder, but grinned. "Penthouse cleared, boss. All hostiles down."
I looked at Mara. She lowered her rifle, brushing plaster dust from her bare shoulders. A small cut on her collarbone was bleeding, a thin red line against her porcelain skin.
Without thinking, I reached out and gently wiped the droplet of blood with my thumb. She stiffened for a fraction of a second, then leaned almost imperceptibly into my touch.

"You're reckless, Vale," I murmured.
"And you're still alive, Dante," she whispered back, holding my gaze. "Which means we're even."
