Chapter 8 - The Secret That Shattered the Late Founder’s Will

Taylor remained perfectly seated, her face a mask of calm composure. She had anticipated this exact counterattack.

"On what evidence, Mr. Vance?" Taylor asked smoothly.

The woman beside Vance—the company’s Deputy General Counsel, Sarah Jenkins—stepped forward. "We have a digital audit trail showing your personal login credentials accessing the Apex Heritage transaction folders at 6:45 AM today. Furthermore, an anonymous whistleblower in human resources submitted evidence that you received an offshore wire transfer of $50,000 yesterday afternoon."

Victor stepped between the guards and Taylor, his presence radiating pure fury. "Stand down, both of you. You don't give orders in my office, Julian."

"With all due respect, Victor, as CFO and executor of your father’s corporate estate, I have a fiduciary duty to protect this company from industrial sabotage!" Vance shouted. "This woman is an infiltrator. She used your grief and inexperience to worm her way into the highest clearance level, and now she’s selling our acquisition data to our competitors!"

"Is that so?" Taylor stood up slowly, picking up her tablet. "Mr. Vance, if you're going to plant a fake digital trail on my terminal, you really should ensure your IT accomplice understands subnet routing."

Vance’s eyes flickered with unease. "What are you talking about?"

Taylor tapped a few keys and projected her screen onto the large boardroom monitor on the wall. "The file upload did indeed occur at 6:45 AM. However, the MAC address used to initiate that upload wasn't this laptop. It was routed from an auxiliary terminal located on the third floor—specifically, inside the private office of Donald Sterling."

The room went dead silent.

"Furthermore," Taylor continued, advancing the slide, "that $50,000 wire transfer you mentioned? It originated from an account at Pacific Rim Commercial Bank. An account registered under the name of Julian Vance Charitable Foundation. You literally wired money from your own slush fund into a dummy account you created using my social security number from my HR file."

Vance’s face transformed from arrogant triumph to sheer terror. "That’s... that is an outrageous fabrication!"

"And there is one more thing," Taylor said, looking directly at Sarah Jenkins, the legal counsel. "Miss Jenkins, as executor of the estate, Mr. Vance presented the board with Robert Anderson’s updated last will and testament four months ago, which granted Julian Vance voting proxy over all corporate land sales, correct?"

"That is correct," Jenkins stammered, looking nervously between Vance and Taylor.

"Then you might want to look at this," Taylor said, pulling a certified document from her folder. "This is the original, notarized version of Robert Anderson’s will, registered with the California State Probate Registry six days before his death. The signature on the document Mr. Vance submitted to the board is a cut-and-paste forgery taken from a 2021 land easement contract."

"Where did you get that?!" Vance screamed, losing his composure entirely.

"Robert Anderson kept a private safe deposit box at First National Bank in Sacramento," Victor revealed, stepping forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Taylor. "A box only his true heir could open. Taylor and I had it unsealed this morning by a federal court order."

Vance backed away toward the door, his eyes darting frantically. "You have no proof... this is an internal dispute... the board will decide!"

"The board won't get the chance, Julian," Victor said coldly. "The FBI’s White-Collar Financial Crimes Division is already downstairs."
