Chapter 10 - The Storm Gathers Over Valley Ridge

The tension inside the grand living room was suffocating. The two armed enforcers moved slowly along the perimeter, cutting off any escape toward the front entrance.
Victor immediately shifted his body, positioning himself squarely in front of Taylor. "Evelyn, let her walk out of here. Your fight is with me. She has nothing to do with this."
"Oh, Victor, you're just as naive as your father was," Evelyn laughed bitterly. "That girl dismantled a forty-five-million-dollar operation in seventy-two hours. She’s far too dangerous to leave alive. When the police find your car at the bottom of the canyon, they'll assume you were speeding in the rain, consumed by grief over the scandal."
Taylor stepped out from behind Victor’s shoulder, her face betraying not a shred of fear. "You're making a catastrophic mathematical error, Evelyn."
Evelyn frowned in irritation. "What did you say?"
"You assume that Victor and I came here alone," Taylor said calmly, looking down at her wristwatch. "You assume that two people who just uncovered a multi-million-dollar conspiracy would drive into an isolated estate without contingency protocols."
One of the armed men looked nervously at Evelyn. "Ma'am, she’s bluffing."
"Am I?" Taylor asked. She reached into her blazer pocket, pulled out her phone, and turned the screen toward Evelyn.
The screen displayed an active, high-definition audio and video broadcast connected directly to the California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"The lapel pin on my jacket contains a micro-lens and a cellular transponder," Taylor explained with clinical detachment. "Every single word you just uttered—including your admission of fraud, embezzlement, conspiracy to commit murder, and your implication in Robert Anderson’s suspicious death—has been recorded and transmitted to federal prosecutors in real time."
Evelyn’s face turned gray. "Kill them! Now!" she shrieked.
Before the enforcers could draw their weapons, the heavy glass French doors lining the terrace shattered simultaneously.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!"
A tactical team of federal law enforcement officers in body armor poured into the room, their laser sights painting the enforcers' chests. The two hired thugs immediately dropped their guns and hit the floor with their hands behind their heads.
Evelyn collapsed onto the velvet sofa, weeping hysterically as an FBI special agent stepped forward and snapped steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
As Evelyn was led away in tears, Victor turned to Taylor. His hands were shaking, not from fear, but from the overwhelming wave of relief and justice washing over him.
"You had a live wire on your lapel?" Victor asked, his voice filled with awe.
May you like
Taylor smiled softly. "I told you, Mr. Anderson. I never leave the numbers to chance."
Victor stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a fierce, breathless embrace. In that moment, surrounded by the shattered glass and the fading echoes of past betrayal, Taylor felt safer than she had ever felt in her entire life.
