Chapter 6 - The Shadow Behind the Boardroom Door

"They turned on the blast chillers," Victor said, his voice taut with urgency. He reached into his pocket for his phone, but the screen showed zero bars—the thick, insulated reinforced concrete walls of the archive blocked all cellular signals.

"How fast does the temperature drop in here?" Taylor asked, her breath already visible as white puffs of vapor in the gloom.

"To preserve frozen agricultural inventory, this room can reach negative ten degrees Fahrenheit in under twenty minutes," Victor replied grimly. "If we stay exposed, hypothermia will set in within fifteen."

Taylor didn't panic. Her analytical mind kicked into high gear. "There has to be an emergency manual release. OSHA regulations require an illuminated exit bypass on all commercial cold-storage units built after 2015."

"The bypass handle is on the south wall near the loading bay door," Victor said. "Follow me, and stay low to avoid the direct downdraft from the cooling vents."

Victor took her hand, gripping it tightly as they navigated through the labyrinth of towering metal racks in the dark. The cold was biting, penetrating through Taylor’s wool jacket and making her fingers ache.

As they reached the far wall, Victor found the red emergency lever. He grabbed the handle and pulled down with all his weight. The heavy steel mechanism ground against rusted iron, but it didn't budge.

"It’s chained from the outside," Victor grunted, his breath freezing against the steel. "This wasn't an accident. They knew we were here."

Taylor shivered violently, her teeth chattering. "The maintenance panel... on the side of the cooling unit. If we can short-circuit the master thermostat relay, the emergency safety breaker on the main building grid will trip automatically to prevent a compressor explosion!"

Victor looked at her through the gloom, amazed by her quick thinking. "Where is the breaker relay?"

"Above the auxiliary condenser unit! Give me a boost!"

Victor positioned himself against the wall, interlacing his fingers. Taylor stepped onto his hands, and with a powerful heave, Victor lifted her up toward the industrial control box four feet above the ground.

With freezing, trembling fingers, Taylor used the metal pin from her executive security badge to pry open the plastic latch of the thermostat box. Inside, a maze of colored wiring controlled the automated temperature sensors.

Remembering the wiring schematics she had studied during her trade-school night courses, Taylor located the two red sensor lines leading to the primary compressor circuit.

"Victor, brace yourself!" she called down.

Taylor crossed the two live wires. A shower of bright blue sparks erupted from the box.

BANG!

The main transformer blew with a loud pop, the deafening roar of the chillers died instantly, and the emergency fire alarm began blaring throughout the entire complex.

A minute later, the exterior warehouse doors were thrown open, and Henry the night guard, along with two local emergency responders, came rushing in with flashlights.

"Mr. Anderson! Miss Nelson! Dear God, the system malfunctioned!" Henry cried out in horror.

Victor wrapped his heavy wool overcoat around Taylor’s shivering shoulders, holding her close against his chest to share his warmth. "It wasn't a malfunction, Henry. Call the county sheriff. Someone just attempted murder."
