Chapter 6: The Man Who Never Forgot

Later that evening, Lily knocked gently on an office door.
Dr. Michael Carter looked up from a stack of patient files.
"There she is."
"My favorite former patient."
Lily laughed.
"I think you say that to everyone."
"I absolutely do."
"But only one of them still brings me coffee."
She placed a paper cup on his desk.
"You remember what you told me the day I got my red shoes?"
He smiled.
"I've said a lot of things over the years."
"'Run toward your future.'"
Dr. Carter nodded.
"I meant every word."
Lily handed him an envelope.
"What is this?"
He opened it.
Inside was an invitation.
Grand Opening
The Light House Children's Recovery Foundation
"You started it?"
"We started it."
She smiled.
"You, Rachel, every therapist who refused to give up on me..."
"I wouldn't be here without all of you."
Dr. Carter quietly folded the invitation.
His eyes grew misty.
"You know..."
"I spent thirty-five years repairing broken bones."
"But watching you rebuild your life..."
May you like
He smiled proudly.
"That might be the greatest privilege of my career."
