Chapter 3: The Woman Who Lied

The news spread across the country within hours.

Missing Child Found Alive After Four Years.

Detectives reopened every file connected to Lily's disappearance.

Security footage from years earlier revealed a woman pushing a stroller away from the playground minutes before the alarm was raised.

Facial recognition finally identified her.

Margaret Doyle.

The woman Lily knew only as Grandma.

She had never been related to the child.

Margaret had once worked as a caregiver for elderly patients before disappearing from her job.

When police tracked her financial records, they discovered she had been living under a false identity for years.

Three days later, officers surrounded a remote cabin deep in the mountains.

Margaret surrendered without resistance.

During questioning she claimed she had rescued Lily from an unhappy family.

But every piece of evidence contradicted her story.

The injuries.

The confinement.

The lack of schooling.

The deliberate isolation.

She hadn't rescued a child.

She had stolen one.

Then hidden the abuse beneath layers of cloth and oversized boots.

Meanwhile, Lily's biological parents arrived at the hospital.

Emma Harper burst into tears the moment she saw her daughter.

"Lily..."

The little girl stared at the strangers.

She didn't recognize them.

Four years was a lifetime for a child.

Emma knelt beside the bed.

"You used to call me Mommy."

Lily looked uncertain.

Then slowly reached into her hospital blanket.

She pulled out the stuffed rabbit Rachel had given her.

"Can she stay too?"

Rachel smiled through tears.

"Always."

For the first time since entering the hospital...

Lily smiled back.
