Chapter 2: The Girl Who Had No Past

The note sat on the kitchen table like a confession.
"She was never mine."
Detective Sarah Mitchell read it twice before slipping it into an evidence bag.
The small house contained almost nothing.
No family photographs.
No children's drawings.
No birthday cards.
Just a mattress, canned food, and shelves filled with medical supplies.
Everything suggested someone had been caring for Ava.
Nothing suggested anyone had ever loved her.
Back at the hospital, Dr. Michael Carter reviewed the X-rays again.
Every image revealed another untold story.
Fractures that had healed without treatment.
Burn scars of different ages.
Permanent damage to several bones.
Someone had wrapped Ava's feet over and over, hiding the injuries instead of healing them.
Rachel Bennett sat beside Ava's bed, holding a stuffed rabbit donated by the pediatric ward.
"Ava," she asked gently, "do you know your birthday?"
The little girl shook her head.
"What about school?"
"I don't go."
"Friends?"
Another shake of her head.
"Has Grandma always taken care of you?"
Ava looked confused.
"I think so."
"You think so?"
She hesitated.
"She always said I couldn't leave the house."
"Why?"
"'Because people were looking for me.'"
Rachel's heart tightened.
Detectives immediately collected Ava's fingerprints and submitted her DNA for identification.
Forty-eight hours later, the results arrived.
The room fell silent.
Ava wasn't Ava.
Her real name was Lily Harper.
And four years earlier, she had vanished from a public playground during a family picnic.
She had been one of the country's most searched missing children.
Everyone had assumed she was dead.
She had been alive the entire time.
