Chapter 5: The Little Girl in the Purple Cast

Ten years later...
The Children's Recovery Center buzzed with quiet activity.
Lily Bennett, now twenty-one years old, adjusted the name badge clipped to her scrub top.
Lily Bennett — Pediatric Physical Therapy Assistant
Every hallway held echoes of her own childhood.
The scent of antiseptic.
The squeak of therapy shoes.
The determined smiles of children learning to trust their bodies again.
One rainy afternoon, a nurse approached her.
"Lily, could you help with a new patient?"
"Of course."
The nurse lowered her voice.
"She's refusing therapy."
Lily entered Room 214.
A little girl, no older than eight, sat curled in the corner.
Her left leg rested inside a purple cast.
She refused to look at anyone.
When Lily stepped closer, the child whispered,
"It hurts."
"I know," Lily answered.
"They keep saying it will get better."
"It will."
"You don't know that."
Lily smiled gently.
"I do."
She slowly untied one sneaker.
A faint scar stretched across the top of her foot.
Then another.
The girl's eyes widened.
"You got hurt too?"
Lily nodded.
"For a long time."
"Were you scared?"
"Every single day."
The child looked at her for a long moment.
Then quietly asked,
"Did you ever stop?"
Lily smiled.
"One step at a time."
