Chapter 9 - A Sudden Turn of Fate

The drive back to the Berkshires felt like shedding a layer of lead armor.

By the time my SUV passed through the secure gates of the mountain estate, the clock on the dashboard read 3:45 AM. The sky was beginning to turn a pale indigo in the east, the storm clouds breaking apart to reveal a canopy of brilliant stars.

I opened the front door of the estate, stripping off my coat, and walked quietly up the grand wooden staircase.

When I opened the bedroom door, Dr. Thorne was standing near the foot of the bed, adjusting an electronic fetal monitor. Claire was sitting upright, breathing through deep, rhythmic breaths, her hands clutching the bedsheets.

Panic surged through my chest. “What’s happening? Is something wrong?”

Dr. Thorne turned, offering a reassuring yet urgent smile. “Roman, you made it just in time. Claire’s water broke forty minutes ago.”

My heart skipped three beats. “Her water broke? But she’s only thirty-six weeks!”

“The baby is ready,” Dr. Thorne said calmly. “Her contractions are four minutes apart. Given her recent stress and physical history, we are moving her into our on-site medical suite for delivery right now.”

I rushed to the side of the bed, dropping to my knees and taking Claire’s trembling hand in both of mine. Her brow was damp with sweat, but when she saw my face, a radiant, tearful smile broke through her exhaustion.

“You’re back,” she breathed, squeezing my fingers with surprising strength.

“I’m here,” I said, kissing her knuckles, her forehead, her cheeks. “I’m not going anywhere. How are you feeling?”

“Like our baby wants to meet you,” she gasped as another contraction seized her abdomen.

I stood up, wrapping my arms around her shoulders to support her as the medical team transferred her to the delivery suite on the first floor.

The next four hours were a whirlwind of emotion, agony, and raw human strength.

I stood beside Claire through every wave of pain, holding her hand, letting her crush my fingers, wiping the sweat from her brow, and whispering words of love and devotion into her ear. The powerful mafia boss who had brought an entire city to its knees was reduced to a humble servant, marveling at the incredible resilience of the woman beside him.

“Push, Claire!” Dr. Thorne encouraged. “One more big push, honey! The head is crowning!”

Claire let out a fierce, breathless cry, digging her heels in and pushing with every remaining ounce of strength in her soul.

At 7:14 AM, as the golden rays of the morning sun flooded through the large windows of the delivery suite, a loud, clear, miraculous cry broke the silence of the room.

Waaaah! Waaaah!

The sound shattered every dark shadow that had ever existed in my life.

“It’s a girl,” Dr. Thorne announced, her face glowing with triumph as she lifted the tiny, squirming baby. “A beautiful, healthy baby girl.”

Tears blurred my vision completely. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't speak.

Dr. Thorne cleaned our daughter, wrapped her in a soft, warm fleece blanket, and placed her gently into Claire’s arms.

Claire looked down at the tiny bundle, weeping softly as she kissed the baby’s rosy cheeks. The little girl had a thick tuft of dark hair, just like mine, and tiny, delicate fingers that immediately grasped the fabric of Claire’s gown.

“Roman,” Claire whispered, looking up at me through her tears. “Look at our daughter.”

I sat on the edge of the bed, my hand trembling as I reached out with a single index finger. The baby’s tiny hand instantly curled around my finger, holding on with unbreakable strength.

“Victoria,” I choked out, the name rising naturally from the depths of my heart. “Her name is Victoria. Because she conquered everything to get here.”

Claire smiled, resting her head against my chest as we held our daughter together. “Victoria Vance. It’s perfect.”
