Chapter 12 - The Foundations of a New Legacy

By spring, the construction of our new estate on the rocky coast of Camden, Maine, was nearly complete.

The estate was built on a high bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, designed with vast glass windows, warm cedar wood, and sprawling gardens where Victoria could grow up with the sea breeze in her hair.

There were no hidden panic rooms. No biometric surveillance checkpoints. Just a high stone wall covered in climbing ivy and a home filled with light, laughter, and music.

One sunny afternoon in May, I was standing on the newly finished wooden deck, watching the fishing boats return to the harbor, when Claire walked out carrying Victoria.

Victoria, now six months old, was a ball of boundless energy and bright smiles. She wore a little yellow sun hat and giggled loudly as the ocean wind ruffled her dark curls.

“Look who just learned to sit up all by herself,” Claire announced proudly, handing Victoria to me.

I lifted my daughter into the air, making her squeal with delight before pulling her against my chest. “She’s going to be running across this lawn before we even unpack the boxes.”

Claire laughed, leaning against the wooden railing beside me. “Let her run. She has all the room in the world.”

I looked at Claire, seeing the complete peace in her expression. The fragile, terrified woman I had found outside that pawnshop in Chelsea seemed like a distant memory from another lifetime.

“Claire,” I said, setting Victoria gently into her stroller.

“Yes, Roman?”

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

Claire’s breath hitched. “Roman… what is that? I already have my ring.”

I opened the box to reveal a second band—a delicate, custom-designed ring made of rose gold, engraved with Victoria’s birthdate and set with two intertwined infinity knots made of diamonds.

“When we got married three years ago, I gave you a ring that bound you to an empire,” I said, taking her trembling hand in mine. “Today, I want to ask you to marry me again. Not as Roman Vance the mafia prince, but as Roman—the man who loves you, respects you, and wants to spend every single day of his life making you happy.”

Tears of pure joy spilled over Claire’s cheeks.

“Yes,” she choked out, throwing her arms around my neck and pulling me down into a passionate kiss. “A thousand times yes, Roman!”

Victoria clapped her tiny hands from the stroller, babbling happily as if she understood every single word.
