Chapter 10 - Rebuilding What Was Broken

The next two weeks at the Berkshire estate were the most peaceful days of my life.
The outside world ceased to exist. Julian was in federal custody awaiting trial without bail, his empire dismantled and his name erased from corporate registries. Dante Falcone had fled to Italy, his syndicate dissolved. The docks of Boston were secure, operating under honest, transparent management overseen by Frank.
Inside the safehouse, the only business that mattered was the feeding schedule of Victoria Vance.
Every morning, I woke up early to prepare breakfast for Claire—fresh fruit, poached eggs, warm sourdough bread, and fresh juices. I spent hours sitting in the rocking chair beside the fireplace, holding Victoria against my bare chest, feeling her tiny heartbeat sync with mine.
One afternoon, while Victoria was fast asleep in her yellow crib—which we had restored, repainted, and brought to the estate as a reminder of Claire’s incredible courage—Claire walked out onto the stone patio where I was sitting.
She sat beside me, wrapping her hands around a warm mug of cocoa.
“You’ve changed, Roman,” she said softly, gazing at the snow-covered mountains.
“How?”
“You don't carry the weight of a ghost on your shoulders anymore,” she replied. “When I married you, you always looked like you were waiting for someone to strike from the shadows. You were always guarded, always calculating.”
I took her hand, interlacing my fingers with hers. “Because I was living in my father’s past, Claire. I thought power was about how many enemies you could intimidate. But these past two weeks… watching you hold Victoria… I realized real power is having something so precious that you would gladly rewrite your entire life just to keep it safe.”
Claire turned to look at me, her hazel eyes soft with emotion. “I don't want to go back to the townhouse in Beacon Hill, Roman. Too many lies were told in those rooms.”
“We’re never going back there,” I agreed immediately. “I’ve already put the townhouse on the market. All proceeds are going directly into a foundation for women’s shelters in Boston. We’re going to build a new home. Wherever you want. Here in the Berkshires, or by the coast in Maine. Wherever you and Victoria feel safe.”

Tears welled in Claire’s eyes, and she leaned forward, pressing her lips softly against mine.
It was a kiss of forgiveness, of healing, and of a future finally freed from fear.
