Chapter 14 - A Celebration by the Sea

The day of our vow renewal arrived under a cloudless sapphire sky.

The lawn overlooking the ocean was decorated with hundreds of white lilies, soft linen canopies, and gentle fairy lights strung between the cedar trees. Only our closest, most trusted friends were in attendance—Frank, Dr. Thorne, Miller, and the loyal men who had stood by us during the war.

Claire walked down the grassy aisle wearing a flowing white lace dress that trailed behind her in the ocean breeze. She carried Victoria in her arms, both of them radiant under the afternoon sun.

When she reached the altar, she handed Victoria to Dr. Thorne and took my hands in hers.

We didn't need a written script. We didn't need rehearsed speeches.

“Three years ago, I promised to love you in sickness and in health,” I said, looking straight into the hazel eyes that had saved my life. “I failed that promise when I allowed darkness and suspicion to grow between us. But you showed me what true courage is. You survived the cold, protected our daughter, and gave me a reason to become a better man. Today, Claire, I promise you my life, my loyalty, and my unconditional love. Forever.”

Claire’s hands tightened around mine, tears sparkling on her eyelashes.

“I ran because I was afraid,” Claire answered, her voice clear and resonant against the sound of the crashing waves. “But even in the coldest cellar, with nothing to my name, I knew that my heart still belonged to you. You tore down cities to find us, Roman. You gave us safety, peace, and a home filled with love. I choose you today, tomorrow, and for all the days of our lives.”

“By the power vested in me,” Father Thomas declared with a wide, joyful smile, “I pronounce you husband and wife once more. Roman, kiss your bride.”

I pulled Claire into my arms, dipping her slightly as our lips met in a deep, breathtaking kiss, while our friends erupted into cheers and applause.

Victoria let out a happy squeal, reaching out from Dr. Thorne’s arms to join the embrace.

We gathered our daughter between us, looking out over the endless horizon of the Atlantic Ocean—a horizon that was bright, beautiful, and completely ours.
