Chapter 7 - The Subprime Trap: Humberto's Desperate Plea In The Gold Room

By 3:00 PM that afternoon, Humberto and Mauricio Vega were trapped in a financial vice that was tightening by the second.
Their boutique was seized. Their retail inventory was locked under court supervision. Their country club status was gone. And every bank in Denver had received a formal fraud notification regarding Mauricio’s forged promissory notes.
Desperate to avoid immediate arrest, Humberto and Mauricio arrived at the headquarters of Morales Capital Partners in the financial district. They had spent three hours begging receptionist after receptionist for an emergency meeting with the managing board.
They were ushered into the Gold Room—a magnificent boardroom with 30-foot glass walls overlooking the Rocky Mountains.
Humberto looked completely broken. His suit was wrinkled, his tie askew, his hands trembling uncontrollably. Mauricio was pale, chewing his fingernails down to the quick.
The double doors opened.
I walked in, followed by my lead corporate counsel, David Sterling, and Arthur Vance.
I took the head seat at the conference table.
“You requested an emergency hearing, gentlemen,” I said coldly. “You have five minutes.”
Humberto dropped to his knees right there on the Persian carpet, clasping his hands together like a beggar.
“Elena! Please! I am begging you on my knees!” Humberto wept openly. “Call off the fraud investigators! If the District Attorney files criminal charges for the inventory and the lease fraud, I will spend the rest of my life in federal prison! We will lose our house, our cars, everything!”
Mauricio rushed over to my side, his eyes wild with terror. “Elena! Think of Valeria! If I go to prison, it will destroy her reputation! We are husband and wife! We took vows before God! You can't destroy your own son-in-law!”
David Sterling opened a leather portfolio and slid a thick stack of legal documents in front of Mauricio.
“Mr. Vega,” David said sharply, “as of noon today, Valeria Morales has filed for an immediate annulment of marriage on the grounds of criminal fraud, intentional deceit, and grand larceny.”

Mauricio stumbled back as if he had been punched in the gut. “Annulment...? No... no, she loves me!”
“She loved the man she thought you were,” I replied, my voice slicing through the air like cold steel. “She does not love a coward who forged her name to steal her family’s home.”
