Chapter 11 - The Public Auction: Buying The Vega Estate For Pennies

On the steps of the Denver City and County Building, a cold winter breeze swirled around a crowd of real estate investors, bank representatives, and curious onlookers gathered for the monthly judicial foreclosure auction.
Humberto and Beatriz stood at the back of the crowd, bundled in cheap coats, looking like hollow shells of their former selves. They had come to watch the tragic end of their pride: the auction of their 10,000-square-foot Cherry Hills mansion.
The auctioneer stood on the podium, his voice echoing across the courtyard.
“Item 402: The residential property located at 14 Cherry Hills Farm Drive. Minimum opening bid set by the primary lienholder at one million two hundred thousand dollars.”
A local flipper raised his paddle. “1.2 million.”
A commercial group called out, “1.3 million.”
Beatriz covered her face, weeping softly into her scarf. “Our home... our beautiful home...”
From the front row, Arthur Vance raised his black paddle with effortless composure.
“Three million dollars. Cash. Immediate settlement.”
The entire courtyard fell silent. The other bidders immediately lowered their paddles, recognizing the financial firepower of the Morales Group.
The auctioneer scanned the crowd. “Three million going once... going twice... Sold to Morales Real Estate Holdings!”

Humberto’s head dropped back against the stone pillar. He slid down to his knees on the freezing pavement.
The very mansion they had used to brag about their elite status was now officially the private property of Elena Morales.
