Chapter 6 - The Country Club Humiliation: Beatriz’s Grand Illusions Shatter

While Humberto was having a nervous breakdown on 17th Street, Beatriz Vega was holding court at the prestigious Cherry Hills Country Club.
Beatriz had spent the last two years treating the club’s dining room as her personal runway. She was sitting at the center terrace table with three prominent socialites—wives of prominent Denver judges and corporate executives—sipping mimosas and attempting to spin Saturday night’s disaster into a fabricated triumph.
“Oh, darling, the rooftop dinner at the Marlowe was simply divine,” Beatriz cooed, waving her manicured hand. “The views were breathtaking. The general manager personally ensured we had the finest vintage champagne from the private cellar.”
One of the women, Evelyn Sterling, leaned forward with a curious smile. “I heard the Marlowe House was completely booked this weekend for an executive retreat. How did you manage to get the Penthouse Terrace on such short notice, Beatriz?”
Beatriz laughed dismissively. “Well, when you have our family’s connections, doors simply open. Humberto has an understanding with the ownership.”
Just then, the club’s head concierge approached the table, accompanied by two private club directors.
“Mrs. Vega?” the lead director asked, his tone unusually formal and rigid.
Beatriz smiled regally. “Yes, Charles? Could you bring us another round of mimosas, please?”
“I’m afraid not, Mrs. Vega,” Charles said, placing a manila envelope on the table. “As of ten minutes ago, your family’s membership at Cherry Hills has been officially terminated by the Board of Governors.”
The table went dead silent. The socialites stared at Beatriz in utter disbelief.
Beatriz’s smile vanished. “Terminated?! How dare you! My husband has been a platinum patron for five years! We donate thousands to the annual charity gala!”
“Mrs. Vega,” Charles replied loudly enough for the surrounding tables to hear, “your monthly membership dues and catering charges have been returned for non-sufficient funds for three consecutive billing cycles. Furthermore, our primary benefactor and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees has reviewed your account.”
Beatriz stood up, trembling with indignation. “And who is this chairperson? I want to speak to them right now!”
The French doors to the terrace opened.
I walked out onto the sunlit patio, dressed in a tailored navy Ralph Lauren pantsuit, wearing a vintage Patek Philippe watch that my late husband had given me thirty years ago.
Behind me walked Valeria, standing tall, elegant, and composed.
The entire terrace gasped. Evelyn Sterling immediately stood up, smiling warmly. “Elena! Good morning! We had no idea you were back in town!”
Beatriz looked between me, the club directors, and Evelyn, her face turning ghostly white.
“Elena...?” Beatriz choked out. “You’re... you’re the Chairperson of Cherry Hills?”
“I have been for twelve years, Beatriz,” I said calmly, stepping up to the table. “When Humberto applied for membership, he begged the board for an installment payment plan. I personally approved his application back then because I believed in giving people an opportunity to build a good life.”
I looked at the gold jewelry Beatriz was wearing—jewelry that was currently being audited for commercial counterfeit fraud.
“It seems my generosity was wasted on thieves and snobs.”

I turned to Charles. “Escort Mrs. Vega to the parking lot. Have the valet bring her car around immediately.”
Beatriz grabbed her designer handbag, tears of pure humiliation streaming down her face, as every high-society woman on the terrace watched her scurry away in disgrace.
