Chapter 9 - Toby’s Counter-Offensive

That night, our home was placed under round-the-clock armed protection by the Ohio BCI. Toby and I converted my father’s third-floor study into a tactical operations center.
Toby had not slept in thirty-six hours. With the guidance of federal cyber-forensic specialists assigned by Raymond, Toby was systematically deconstructing the digital architecture of Apex Horizon Capital.
“Mom, look at this routing node,” Toby said, pointing to a dynamic visualization of offshore financial flows on his multi-monitor setup. “Apex Horizon isn’t just a predatory lender. It’s an unlicensed clearinghouse for illicit dark-pool capital originating from sanctioned shell companies in Eastern Europe.”
“How did Christopher get connected with people like this?” I asked, looking at the complex web of offshore entities.
“He didn’t find them on his own,” Toby explained, pulling up a series of encrypted email threads recovered from Christopher’s secondary cloud backups. “They targeted him. Two years ago, when Dad made his first disastrous speculative energy trade, an intermediary named Julian Drake approached him at an international finance summit in Miami. Drake offered him private liquidity to cover his losses, deliberately drawing him deeper into the debt trap until Dad was completely compromised.”
“They manufactured his desperation,” I realized, the horrifying scope of the conspiracy becoming clear. “They knew who his wife was. They knew the value of the Vance Family Trust. They squeezed Christopher until he believed that killing me was his only possible way out.”
“Exactly,” Toby nodded. “And here is the fatal flaw in their system: Julian Drake used a single master digital key to cross-collateralize fifty different real estate portfolios across the United States. If we can prove that Drake knowingly accepted forged grantor signatures on our estate’s deeds, it triggers an automatic civil asset forfeiture freeze under the federal RICO Act against all of Apex Horizon’s U.S. domestic holding accounts.”
“Can you prove Drake knew the signatures were forged?” I asked.
Toby smiled—a sharp, triumphant smile that reminded me so much of my father’s brilliance.
“I already did, Mom,” Toby said, opening an audio-video file dated three weeks ago.
It was a screen recording of a secure Zoom conference between Christopher and Julian Drake.
In the video, Christopher’s voice was frantic: “Julian, Gwen will never sign these supplemental mortgage deeds! She’s suspicious about the trust balances! If she looks at the land registry, everything blows up!”
Julian Drake’s voice replied with chilling, clinical indifference: “Then don’t ask her to sign it, Christopher. Use the algorithmic plotter to replicate her signature, as we did with the Akron portfolios. Once the lien is registered in Grand Cayman, she will have no legal standing to challenge it before the liquidation date. Just ensure that when the time comes, she is no longer around to testify in a deposition.”
My breath caught in my throat.

Julian Drake was not just a predatory corporate liquidator. He was an active, co-conspiring accessory to premeditated attempted murder.
“Evelyn!” I called out into the hallway where our attorney was reviewing case law. “Get Raymond on the phone right now. We have the load-bearing column.”
