Chapter 4 - The Poisoner's Architect

My first move was to secure an independent, covert legal and forensic ally. At 10:30 AM, I bypassed our usual family attorneys and drove to the secure downtown offices of Evelyn Cross, a premier forensic litigation attorney and a lifelong friend of my late father.

Evelyn was seventy years old, razor-sharp, and feared by every corrupt corporate executive in the state of Ohio. When she saw the documents Toby had extracted, along with the high-resolution photographs of the insurance binders and the forged suicide note, her face hardened into stone.

“This is cold-blooded premeditated capital murder and grand-scale corporate fraud, Gwen,” Evelyn said, closing the encrypted folder on her secure terminal. “If we file an immediate restraining order and alert the local district attorney, Christopher will be arrested within hours. However, his defense will immediately move to suppress the digital evidence obtained by a minor without a warrant. Furthermore, his offshore syndicate accounts will vanish into private trust blind spots, and Dr. Marcus will shred every piece of clinic documentation before the state medical board can execute a search warrant.”

“I don’t just want Christopher arrested, Evelyn,” I said, leaning across her desk, my voice devoid of any tremor. “I want him completely dismantled. I want every asset he tried to steal returned to my son. I want Dr. Marcus stripped of his medical license and behind bars. And I want the proof to be so absolute that no jury in this country will ever let them see the light of day.”

Evelyn smiled a slow, predatory smile. “Now you sound like Arthur Vance’s daughter. What do you have in mind?”

“We need to control the setting,” I explained. “Christopher thinks I am walking into Dr. Marcus’s private clinic at 3:00 PM today for an intravenous infusion. Instead of canceling, we let the appointment proceed under our terms. We replace Marcus’s clinic staff with covert state investigators, or we record the entire clinical transaction in real-time with continuous toxicology surveillance.”

Evelyn reached for her private red landline. “I am calling Special Agent Raymond Vance at the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He’s your second cousin, Gwen, and he leads the Special Financial and Violent Crimes Taskforce. If Raymond hears that someone is trying to murder Arthur Vance’s daughter for a trust fund, he will mobilize a specialized tactical surveillance unit within twenty minutes.”

Within an hour, Agent Raymond Vance arrived at Evelyn’s office. Tall, broad-shouldered, and possessing an imposing aura of calm authority, Raymond reviewed the files with ruthless efficiency.

“Here is how we execute this,” Raymond said, pulling out a specialized micro-surveillance kit. “We cannot simply raid Marcus’s clinic beforehand, because Marcus will claim the infusion was standard saline and vitamins. We have to catch Dr. Marcus in the act of preparing and attempting to administer an unprescribed, fatal substance.”

Raymond fitted me with a state-of-the-art micro-camera disguised as an antique onyx pendant resting against my collarbone, capable of transmitting ultra-high-definition audio and video directly to a tactical surveillance van. In addition, he provided me with an ultra-thin silicone pressure cuff to wear under my sweater, which would allow a tactical paramedic team to monitor my physiological vitals remotely.

“At 2:45 PM, Christopher will pick you up and drive you to the clinic,” Raymond instructed. “Our undercover agents will already be positioned inside the clinic’s adjoining parking structure and disguised as utility maintenance workers inside the medical building. You will enter the examination room. You will allow Dr. Marcus to set up the IV apparatus. The moment Marcus attempts to introduce the secondary lethal agent into the IV line, our team will breach the room.”

“And what about Christopher?” I asked.

“Christopher will be waiting in the executive lounge, believing his nightmare is about to be solved,” Raymond replied coldly. “We will ensure he has a front-row seat to his own destruction.”
