Chapter 12 - Purging the Shadows

The weeks following the jailhouse confrontation were dedicated to a complete physical, financial, and emotional cleansing of our lives.

Under the supervision of Evelyn Cross and forensic restructuring accountants, every single property within the Vance Family Trust was audited, cleared of encumbrances, and fortified behind impenetrable multi-generational protective trusts.

The $24 million fraudulent life insurance policies were officially canceled by the state insurance commissioner, and the insurance conglomerates that had facilitated the underwriting without verifying independent spousal consent were hit with massive regulatory fines.

At the Cleveland estate, Toby and I oversaw a complete structural and technological overhaul. Every single smart device, security camera, and digital lock installed during Christopher’s tenure was completely removed and replaced with an independent, military-grade closed-circuit security network designed by Toby and Raymond’s tactical cybersecurity consultants.

One Saturday afternoon, Toby and I went up to the master suite.

We brought down the heavy nineteenth-century oak armoire that had concealed the safe room where I had hidden on that terrifying night at 2:13 AM. Together with a team of skilled heritage carpenters, we renovated the entire suite, transforming the master bedroom into a sunlit architectural design studio filled with my father’s drafting tables, historic blueprints, and models of upcoming urban restoration projects.

As I stood by the grand window, watching the golden afternoon sunlight wash across the polished hardwood floors, Toby walked into the room holding a vintage brass plaque.

It was the original founding plaque of Vance Engineering, dated 1974, which my father had kept in his workshop.

“Where should we hang it, Mom?” Toby asked, smiling.

“Right above the main design hearth,” I said, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Where it will remind us every day of who we are and what we survived.”
