Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Accomplice

“State Police! BCI Tactical! Do not move! Drop the syringe immediately!”

Agent Raymond Vance and four heavily armed tactical officers in tactical vests flooded the room, their weapons trained directly on Dr. Marcus’s chest.

Marcus let out a shrill cry of terror, dropping the syringe onto the sterile tray where it shattered, the clear liquid pooling across the metal surface. He backed against the counter, his hands held high in the air, his face completely drained of color.

“Get on the ground! Face down! Hands behind your head!” Raymond roared.

Marcus collapsed to his knees, trembling violently. “Wait! Please! Don’t shoot! I didn’t administer it! I didn’t touch her!”

Two tactical officers pinned Marcus to the floor, securing his wrists in heavy steel handcuffs, while a BCI forensic technician immediately moved in with specialized chemical collection swabs and airtight evidence containers to secure the shattered vial and the spilled compound.

“Preliminary chemical field test indicates high-concentration potassium chloride combined with an unregulated neuromuscular blocking agent,” the forensic technician reported into his radio. “Lethal within three to five minutes of intravenous push.”

At that moment, the door to the executive lounge down the hall was kicked open by a secondary tactical team.

Christopher was dragged into the hallway in handcuffs, his tailored suit disheveled, his eyes wide with utter shock and incomprehension. He struggled against the two massive state troopers holding him, shouting wildly.

“What is the meaning of this?! Do you know who I am?! I am Christopher Vance! Where is my wife?! Gwen! Gwen, what is happening?!”

I walked out of Examination Room 4, stepping into the bright light of the corridor.

Christopher stopped struggling the moment his eyes met mine. For the first time in fourteen years, the charming, polished mask was completely shattered. He looked at me, then at the onyx pendant resting on my chest, then at Agent Raymond Vance standing beside me with a federal arrest warrant in his hand.

“Hello, Christopher,” I said calmly, stepping forward until I was standing two feet from him.

“Gwen... darling, this is a catastrophic misunderstanding,” Christopher began, his voice cracking, trying desperately to rebuild his facade. “Marcus... Marcus must have made a medical error. I brought you here to help you! You have to tell them to let me go!”

“Did you bring me here to help me, Christopher?” I asked, pulling out my phone and pressing play on an audio recording.

From the speaker came Christopher’s voice from 2:15 AM the previous night, recorded by the high-fidelity acoustic microphone hidden in the master suite’s ceiling beam:

“Gwen... where are you...?” followed by the sound of the syringe clicking against his tactical vest and the rustle of the forged suicide note.

Christopher’s face turned an ashen, sickly gray. His knees buckled slightly, but the troopers held him upright.

Agent Raymond Vance stepped forward, holding the charging document in front of Christopher’s face.

“Christopher Sterling Vance, you are under arrest for attempted aggravated murder, conspiracy to commit murder for financial gain, multi-jurisdictional wire fraud, and grand forgery involving the Vance Family Trust. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As the officers began dragging Christopher toward the elevators, he turned his head, screaming back at me with raw, venomous hatred:

“You think you won, Gwen?! You think this is over?! Those Caribbean syndicates already own the deeds! You have fourteen days before they seize every brick of your father’s legacy! You’ll be penniless in the streets!”

“My father built this empire, Christopher,” I replied coldly as the elevator doors began to close. “And I know how to tear down every single thief who tries to steal it.”
