Chapter 4 - Trauma Ward 4 and the Hidden Fracture

Rush University Medical Center’s emergency trauma wing was humming with controlled, sterile intensity.

Inside Trauma Bay 4, Dr. Maya Lin—a sharp, brilliant trauma surgeon with dark hair and laser-focused eyes—was examining my mother’s full-body CT scans on the glowing lightboards.

I stood beside the bed, holding Ruth’s warm hand while an IV line delivered broad-spectrum pain relief and fluids into her system.

Dr. Lin walked over, pulling down her surgical mask, her expression profoundly grave.

"Elena?" Dr. Lin asked.

"Yes, Doctor. What are we looking at?"

"Your mother is remarkably resilient, but the injuries are severe," Dr. Lin said, pointing to the glowing x-rays. "She has a non-displaced fracture of the fifth and sixth ribs on her left side. Her left radius and ulna are fractured at the wrist joint, which will require orthopedic surgery and titanium pinning tomorrow morning."

I swallowed the lump in my throat, gently brushing a strand of white hair from Mom’s forehead. "And her head?"

"She has a moderate concussion and a four-centimeter scalp laceration that required eight sutures," Dr. Lin continued. "The blunt force trauma to her shoulder narrowly missed severing the brachial plexus nerve. If that aluminum bat had struck two inches higher against her cervical spine... your mother would have been paralyzed or killed instantly."

"It was an attempted execution," I said, my voice hardening into cold marble.

"We have initiated full forensic evidentiary protocol," Dr. Lin assured me. "Every bruise, fracture, and laceration has been high-resolution photographed with scale rulers. My clinical forensic report will classify these injuries as life-threatening felonious battery with an aggravated blunt instrument."

On the bed, Ruth opened her eyes, the pain medication finally allowing her to breathe without agonizing spasms.

"Elena...?" she whispered softly.

"I'm right here, Mom," I smiled, leaning down and kissing her cheek. "Dr. Lin is taking wonderful care of you. You're going to have surgery on your wrist in the morning, and then you're going to rest."

Tears welled up in my mother's soft brown eyes. "How could Daniel do this, Elena? I carried him for nine months. When his first business failed, I remortgaged the house to give him fifty thousand dollars. When Vanessa wanted that luxury wedding in Maui, I gave them my grandmother’s diamond ring. Why do they hate me so much?"

"They don't hate you, Mom," I said gently, wiping a tear from her cheek. "They are parasites. They worship money and status, and they saw your kindness as weakness. But they made one fatal mistake."

"What mistake?"

"They forgot that I am your daughter," I replied. "And by the time I am finished with them, there will not be a single stone left for them to stand on."

The trauma bay door slid open, and Special Agent Marcus Cole of the Illinois State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations stepped inside, carrying a black briefcase and a secure tablet.

"Chief Prosecutor Ward," Agent Cole said, nodding respectfully. "We need to talk outside. We just executed an emergency warrant on Vanessa Ward’s vehicle and phone records."

I squeezed Mom's hand. "I'll be right back, baby."

I stepped out into the quiet corridor. "What did you find, Marcus?"

Agent Cole unlocked his tablet, his eyes dark with outrage. "This wasn't just a spontaneous domestic dispute over an inheritance, Elena. This was a premeditated, coordinated criminal conspiracy involving a forty-million-dollar municipal development scheme."
