Chapter 12 - Vanessa’s Desperate Bail Hearing

The formal bail hearing took place on Monday morning in Courtroom 502 before the Honorable Judge Evelyn Vance—a legendary, no-nonsense jurist known for her unyielding severity toward violent offenders.
The courtroom gallery was packed to maximum capacity with reporters, community activists, and neighborhood residents wearing purple ribbons in support of Ruth Ward.
Vanessa Ward was led into the courtroom by three armed sheriff deputies.
The transformation from the arrogant, smug socialite of three days ago was complete. Her bleached-blonde hair was unwashed and tangled, her face devoid of makeup, her eyes wild with panic. She was wearing standard prison-orange scrubs and heavy iron leg shackles that dragged across the carpet with a rhythmic, metallic scrape.
Her high-priced defense attorney, Jonathan Vance, stepped to the podium, attempting to argue for home confinement on electronic monitoring.
"Your Honor," the attorney pleaded, "my client is a prominent community member with zero prior criminal convictions. She is experiencing profound emotional distress and postpartum anxiety. We request a reasonable bond of one hundred thousand dollars so she may seek private psychiatric care."
Vanessa immediately burst into loud, theatrical wails, clutching the defense table. "I'm sick, Your Honor! It was an accident! Ruth attacked me first! I was terrified!"
Judge Vance adjusted her glasses, looking down from the bench with utter, ice-cold revulsion.
"Counselor," Judge Vance’s voice boomed through the silent courtroom like rolling thunder. "This court has reviewed the 4K surveillance footage. Your client was recorded swinging an aluminum baseball bat into the bones of a sixty-eight-year-old grandmother while demanding a property deed, and then laughing about it while the victim bled in a police lobby."
The judge slammed her gavel down with terrifying force.

"The defendant is a violent, remorseless predator and a direct danger to civilized society. Bail is DENIED. Remanded to Cook County Maximum Security Division Eleven without bond pending trial."
Vanessa shrieked in horror, dropping to the floor, clawing at the carpet as four female deputies grabbed her arms and dragged her kicking and screaming through the heavy steel holding cell doors.
