Chapter 2 - The 4K Video in the Cloud and the Frozen Room

The silence that fell over Precinct Six was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.
Vanessa’s smirk froze on her face, turning into a grotesque, paralyzed grimace. The styrofoam cup in her hands began to tremble, hot coffee splashing over the rim and soaking into her jeans.
"Cloud... cameras?" Daniel choked out, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic pitch. "You... you didn't tell us you put cameras in the house."
"Why would I announce home security to my family, Daniel?" I asked, tapping the screen of my phone. "Unless, of course, you were planning on breaking in at midnight to beat our mother with a weapon."
Sergeant Mullins swallowed hard, his throat making a dry, clicking sound. "Counselor... let’s not get ahead of ourselves. If there is digital evidence, we can review it during normal daytime administrative hours—"
"We are reviewing it right now, Sergeant," I commanded, stepping behind the watch commander’s desk.
I plugged my encrypted lightning adapter directly into the precinct's 55-inch master briefing monitor mounted above the dispatch partition.
"Officer," I snapped at the wide-eyed rookie who had tried to block me earlier. "Switch input to HDMI 2. Right now."
The young officer didn't hesitate. He scrambled to grab the remote and hit the input button.
The giant screen flickered, then resolved into a crystal-clear, ultra-high-definition night-vision stream labeled: KITCHEN & REAR ENTRY - 00:14:22 AM.
The audio came through the precinct speakers with horrifying clarity.
On the screen, the back door of my mother's historic Craftsman home swung open. Daniel and Vanessa entered, Daniel holding a flashlight and a manila folder, Vanessa carrying a blue 32-inch Louisville Slugger aluminum baseball bat.
The precinct officers gathered around the desk, their eyes glued to the display.
On the video, my mother walked into the kitchen in her pink cardigan, turning on the overhead light, looking startled and frightened.
"Daniel? What are you doing here at this hour?" Ruth’s voice echoed through the squad room.
On screen, Vanessa stepped forward, slamming the aluminum bat onto the kitchen island with a deafening CLANG.
"Shut up, Ruth," Vanessa’s recorded voice snarled, cold and dripping with venom. "We are done asking nicely. Sign the quitclaim deed over to Daniel, or you’re leaving this house in a body bag."
"I'm not signing my home away to pay your credit card debts, Vanessa!" Ruth cried, backing toward the refrigerator. "Get out of my house!"
Then came the violence.
Vanessa lunged across the island. The screen captured the exact moment Vanessa raised the metal bat and swung it with brutal, full-body force into my mother's left shoulder.
A sickening, wet CRACK echoed through the speakers, followed by Ruth’s piercing scream of agony.
My mother collapsed to the linoleum, clutching her shattered wrist as Vanessa stood over her, raising the bat a second time to strike her ribs.
And right there in the frame, leaning casually against the kitchen doorframe with his arms crossed, was my brother Daniel.
"Just sign the goddamn paper, Mom," Daniel said on the tape, chewing gum. "Make this easy. Nobody is coming to help you."
In the precinct lobby, absolute horror washed over the gathered patrolmen.
The rookie officer stepped away from Vanessa as if she were a venomous snake.
Vanessa jumped out of the swivel chair, knocking her coffee onto the floor. "Turn that off! That's illegal surveillance! You can't use that! Daniel, tell them she can't use that!"
Daniel dropped his face into his hands, sliding down against the wall, hyperventilating. "Oh God... oh God, Elena... please..."
I unplugged my phone, turned to Sergeant Mullins, and stared directly into his panicked, guilty eyes.
"Sergeant Mullins," I said, my voice ringing with lethal legal authority. "You have sixty seconds to call a trauma transport unit for my mother. And then you are going to arrest Vanessa Ward and Daniel Ward for Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Elder Abuse, and Extortion."
May you like
I leaned in, my face inches from his.
"And if you hesitate for even one second, Sergeant, I will personally file federal obstruction and civil rights violation indictments against you and every officer on this shift before the sun rises."
