Chapter 8 - The Desperate Awakening

I received Ray’s text message while sitting in a rocking chair in my Midtown apartment, softly humming a lullaby as Maya slept against my shoulder.
I looked at the photograph of Evelyn collapsed on the stage, Jasmine sobbing on the floor in her ruined dress, and Darius kneeling in sheer panic.
I felt no urge to celebrate. I felt no petty satisfaction. All I felt was a profound, peaceful sense of closure. The universe had simply balanced the ledger that Evelyn and Darius had tried to cheat.
Two days later, the fallout was catastrophic.
The Atlanta business press had a field day. Headlines like “Logistics Empire Rocked by Paternity Scandal at $50K Gala” and “Johnson Logistics Shares Plunge 22% Following Board Turmoil” dominated the morning news. Three major corporate clients canceled their multi-million-dollar logistics contracts within forty-eight hours, citing moral turpitude clauses and leadership instability.
Evelyn had suffered a mild heart attack brought on by acute stress and hypertensive crisis. She was confined to a private cardiac suite at Emory University Hospital.
And that was where Darius sat, staring at his reflection in the dark hospital window, realizing the total devastation of his existence.
"Darius..." Evelyn’s voice came weakly from the hospital bed. Her face looked sunken, aged by ten years in forty-eight hours. "What is the board saying?"
"They're calling an emergency shareholder vote next week, Mom," Darius said, his voice flat and lifeless. "They want to strip us of executive voting power. They're appointing an interim CEO from outside the family."
"No..." Evelyn coughed, tears leaking from the corners of her eyes. "My father built that company... we can't lose it..."
"We already lost it, Mom," Darius said bitterly, turning to look at her. "Because you had to have a boy. Because you couldn't stand Clara. Because you pushed me into Jasmine's bed and told me she was the future."
"You agreed to it, Darius!" Evelyn hissed with what little strength she had left. "You let her go! You signed the separation papers!"
"Because I listened to you!" Darius yelled, standing up so violently that his plastic chair tipped over. "I had a loyal wife! I had a woman who actually loved me, and I threw her away for a gold-digger and a child that isn't even mine!"
Darius stormed out of the hospital room, ignoring the nurses who told him to quiet down. He got into his car and drove aimlessly through the streets of Atlanta.
He didn't know where I lived. He didn't have my new phone number. He had been completely erased from my life.
Desperate, Darius drove to the clinic where my best friend Maya Vance worked as a paralegal. He waited outside the building in the freezing rain for three hours until Maya walked out carrying her briefcase.
"Maya!" Darius ran toward her, soaking wet, his hair plastered to his forehead. "Maya, please! Stop!"
Maya stopped, looking at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated revulsion. "Get out of my way, Darius, or I will have the building security tase you."
"Maya, I just need to see Clara," Darius begged, his voice breaking. "Please. Just tell me where she is. Tell me how she's doing. I need to talk to her."
"You want to talk to her?" Maya scoffed, crossing her arms. "Why? Did your male heir not work out the way your mother planned?"
"I was wrong, Maya! I was blind! I made the biggest mistake of my life!" Darius fell to his knees on the wet sidewalk, crying openly in front of dozens of office workers leaving for the evening. "Tell Clara I will give her everything. The house, the money, my entire salary. I just want my wife back. Please tell me about our baby."

Maya looked down at him with cold, unrelenting eyes.
"Clara gave birth three weeks ago to a beautiful, perfect baby girl," Maya said clearly. "Her name is Maya. And her birth certificate lists the father as Unknown. You will never see her, Darius. You made your choice at that dinner table. Now live with it."
