Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The entire ballroom turned in dead silence toward the entrance. Several security guards moved quickly toward Marcus, but he held up two fingers and flashed an official legal summons with a cold, mocking grin.

"I wouldn't touch me if I were you, boys," Marcus's voice echoed through the vaulted room. "Unless you want Northside precinct officers coming in here with a court injunction."

Evelyn’s face turned from radiant joy to furious disgust. She stepped to the front of the stage, pointing a trembling finger at Marcus. "Who let this thug into a private event? Security, throw this criminal out of my sight immediately!"

"Criminal?" Marcus laughed, strolling casually down the center carpet between rows of Atlanta’s elite. "That’s rich coming from you, old lady. Especially since you’re currently holding a party to celebrate my son."

A collective gasp rippled through the audience.

Jasmine’s face drained of every drop of color. She stepped back so quickly that her heel caught on the edge of her gown, almost causing her to drop the baby. Darius instinctively reached out to steady her, but his eyes were locked on Marcus with mounting dread.

"What did you just say?" Darius demanded, his voice cracking with humiliation and rage. "Who the hell are you?"

"Ask your girlfriend, man," Marcus said, stopping five feet from the stage and gesturing toward Jasmine. "Go ahead, Jasmine. Tell the handsome trust-fund boy who I am. Tell him where you were spending your Friday nights while he was working late at the freight terminal."

"Darius, he's crazy!" Jasmine screamed, tears of panic streaming down her cheeks. "I've never seen this man before in my life! He's a stalker! Call the police! Darius, please!"

"Never seen me?" Marcus shook his head, pulling a smartphone from his pocket. He turned the screen toward the front rows of board members and tapped play on an audio recording.

Jasmine’s voice came through the phone’s speakers, loud and unmistakable:

"Marcus, stop calling the house! I told you, Evelyn is transferring the five hundred grand on the 15th. As soon as the trust clears, I’ll transfer your half to the offshore account in the Caymans. Just let Darius sign the papers first. He's too stupid to ask for a DNA test as long as Evelyn is running the show."

The room exploded into frantic whispering. Camera flashes from high-society bloggers lit up the stage like lightning.

"Turn that off!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice reaching a frantic pitch. "This is a setup! This is extortion!"

"It's not extortion, Mrs. Johnson," Ray Caldwell stepped forward, his voice calm, deep, and commanding. He opened his briefcase and pulled out four thick, stamped legal folders. "My name is Ray Caldwell, licensed private investigator. I am here on behalf of the Fulton County Superior Court to serve a court-ordered emergency paternity preservation order."

Ray handed the first copy to Evelyn, the second to Darius, and the third to the Johnson Logistics board chairman.

"Enclosed you will find certified DNA chain-of-custody results conducted via non-invasive prenatal testing three months ago, along with comparative genomic matching from Mr. Marcus Drake," Ray stated, projecting his voice for the entire room to hear. "The probability of paternity between Darius Johnson and the child Jasmine Carter delivered is zero percent. The probability of paternity with Marcus Drake is ninety-nine point nine-nine percent."

Darius stared down at the laboratory analysis in his hands. His knees buckled, and he had to grab the edge of the podium to keep from collapsing.

"Zero percent..." Darius whispered, his eyes wide and completely hollow. "Zero?"
